Buying a dropped bike...

Is it a good idea even if it has been fixed and fairings have been changed? I found an 06 Gixxer 600 with 30k and lots of mods, and brought the guy down to $4100. Bike is so clean! Unless I asked, he wouldnt have mentioned because its so clean.

Discuss.

Take it for a ride, make sure it drives perfectly straight. Hold the front brake and compress the forks, make sure it compresses and rebounds very smooth, doesn't stick at all at the bottom when it changes direction. Have a look at the fork tubes and give it a wipe with your finger make sure no leaking from the fork seals.

Have a look around the engine cover on the side it was dropped, make sure no oil dripping out (could be as simple as new gasket, or could need replacement engine cover if bent/damaged).

Got pics?

All good bikes have been crashed at least once.

Almost every bike I've owned had been dropped by a previous owner.

Can't say i agree with you there.
If its a tip over or a minor fall then maybe, but when the bike has been cartwheeled on the 401 i'll pass ;)

OP- There's no such thing as a used "never dropped bike", The only way to ensure a bike is new is to buy one new from the dealer. From someone who has done both.

I would buy a $4k-$5 dropped bike anyday, then a new $10,000 bike from the showroom. I had to baby it, i was always paranoid about the slightest scratch, i walked extra far to make sure bike was not parked next to cars, cleaned it, waxed, and it STILL FELL over in broad daylight, because of the SOB kick stand not locking, i walked away herd a crack thump, my brand new bike 2 weeks old, on its side.

It dosen't matter if you're Rossi, once a bike is out of the dealership, its going to fall or get scratched, just buy a used bike as long as its all good mechanically, the bike will run good. I have a 600 sport bike, that has fallen 3 times with me, once by previous owner, and i just replaced the parts that got damaged, and made the bike cooler. as long as the frame is okay anything else on the bike can be upgraded.

My bike was dropped by me in my driveway. Sold it to a guy and told him immediately I was dropped on my driveway with almost no damage except for 2 faint scratches that he probably wouldn't have noticed unless I pointed then out.

This guy in return low balled the hell out of me saying the frame could be bent lol

Wasn't until he walked away (probably checked out other bikes) that he came back a week later with a creditable offer.

Don't be scared. If it's all straight and no leaks or patch jobs, don't even think twice.

Agree with everyone else... Typically it'll be the first time buyers that'll avoid dropped bikes.

What concerns me is the fact that the guy didn't come clean about the drop until you asked him. What else could he be hiding?? Usually tough to hide crash damage on a bike though.

Reminds me of when I was in the market... Went down to see a bike that was listed as "perfect condition" and turns out the guy had an accident going 30 - 40 km/h. He didn't even tell me until I asked him about the cracks / scratches.

Would you sell your bike if you dropped it on your driveway? or never ride it again?

like any other 'condition' of the bike, you need to figure out how to discover the degree of wear/damage on the bike. At times, it's knowing what to look for, and at others, it's gauging the seller.

no No, this time his post actually made sense and it was somewhat coherent and shorter than the entire browser page.... so its something, lets not discourage him

Yup :lmao:that would be me, I didnt want to buy a used dual sport bike because it might have been abused. SO I bought a left over KLX250 from the dealer for a decent price and have in the course of the last few months dropped it too many times to mention, hit a tree or two, had it sunk almost up to the seat, and generally "abused" it myself. Darn thing just keeps going and asking for more though!
