How safe is your pair of gloves? Pics.

Hopefully my misconception will be a warning for others. So I bought this pair of leather and mesh gloves. Thinking they're safe enough until I was proven wrong. Instead of being hot in my full gauntlet all leather gloves I decided to dump $40 on this pair of icon super duty gloves.

I wish I had a pic of mine from when I crashed. Alpinestar spx. Shredded right through the palm and they're not the cheapies either. Gloves can only hold up so much. I'd post a pic of my hand but it's gross. Picture meatloaf

That's why I ride bare handed. Gloves are a waste of cash and don't do anything any way.

I have the same gloves, I guess - shorty Icon. First pair brand new - that seam in the middle was falling apart, Icon replaced them with a brand new pair. I fell in that pair, and seams surprisingly held up. The only negative with shorties - had a scratch on my arm between the sleeve and the shortie glove. Now mostly riding in Velocity gauntlet gloves, but still wear those shorties for city rides.

Dainese people

The Dainese held up because it uses real leather and it's not paper thin. You have to sacrifice a bit of throttle feel to use them.

The street versions of gloves provide great feedback from the bars and still help compared to no glove at all, but they aren't designed for 200kmh+ slides like the race ones are. Even at 100kmh you'll potentially slide for a while though. You get what you pay for most of the time.

Would you like to see what's left of my hand? Without gloves I likely wouldn't have one

The variables involved in any crash make generalizations about gear difficult--see opinions of Nexo/Velocity gear on this forum. Some like it, others not.

Beyond the leather type/design/production you have sweat, rain, putting on/pulling off weakens the gloves over time.

I had one (pricey) pair of Dainese gloves wear through the palm in less than 4 months, the other is still holding up. I've had zippers fail and velcro wear without serious use on jackets/pants/boots/back protectors too.

I've come to the conclusion that gear is a bit like insurance--it may not cover you when the blubber hits the road, but it's better than nothing, so ride accordingly. A global database of crashes and gear worn (with damage) might help zero in on what works but we still only have anecdote for the moment.

That's through a glove. Picture what wouldn't be left if I wasn't wearing them

I used to swear by these until my lowside. 40kmh.. and gravel went right through the palm protection and lodged into my palm.

For $150+ its a huge hunk of $*it and not worth it.

I'd rather have a broken hand over that... Jesus!

Me too. It's been a LONG month and still more to go.

I have friends who argue about not wearing gloves. They seem to have changed their view since my accident. Shocking eh :dontknow:
