I have a Rogers S4 i337M (on Wind), so everything I post applies specifically to this model (and may work on other models, use at your own risk).

I'm doing app stability testing for a company so I'm not able to root my phone or otherwise modify it very much. One of the problems with the stability testing was all of the bloatware/apps that Rogers pre-loads on their phones! YUCK!! So I needed a way to remove ALL carrier bloatware from my phone, without rooting it or flashing it...

**WARNING: THIS WILL FACTORY WIPE YOUR PHONE WITHOUT EVEN ASKING FOR CONFIRMATION!! Seriously. You will lose everything on your phone.

It will switch your Rogers or Bell phone to Telus (they don't load any bloatware). It makes absolutely no difference to your carrier, if your sim isn't unlocked, if your phone isn't unlocked, etc. All it does is change the software pre-load bloatware! If your phone ever had to go back for warranty you can just swap it back to Rogers/Bell using the same process.

When it reboots at the end it'll be a brand spankin new phone and walk you through the initial setup, etc.

Steps to remove bloatware from Rogers or Bell phone by converting to Telus:

You need your IMEI first. You can find it under your battery, or if you don't feel like taking it out of your case/removing the battery just go to Settings, More, About Device, Status, and about half way down is your IMEI number. You can also make it spit it out by dialing *#06#

Click phone, in the dialer type in *#272*Phone’s IMEI Here#

So, in the dialer the full string would look something like *#272*433521692789921#

It'll then bring up a big list of all of the cellular providers supported by your phone/rom, pick Telus (TLS), click install, and wait :D

DONE! Telus only pre-installs one app (which can be removed without root), then you've got nice vanilla phone :)

Here are some other fun dialer codes, mostly required when unlocking ALL of the carrier frequencies in your S4 (makes your Rogers/Bell/Telus S4 work with AWS for Wind and Mobilicity, even with blazing fast 4G speed! And makes your Wind/Mobilicity S4 work with Bell/Rogers/Telus in full LTE!!):

*#0808# usb settings for programming phone with QPST (Make sure to install samsung drivers first! Try RNDIS+DM+MODEM or if doesn't work try RMNET+DM+MODEM, remember to set back to MTP+ADB so your phone shows up as regular USB device/SD card when finished!)

*#9090# servicemode config (change to 2 if QPST is unable to detect Phone (0) on either com ports)

*#2263# force specific cellular frequency (i.e. LTE).

*#0011# check current cellular frequency

If going from Rogers/Bell/Telus to Wind/Mobilicity, after you've loaded the AWS enable file and the phone has rebooted, go to settings, more networks, mobile networks, Access Point Names, and put a dot beside Wind CA. Go back one screen, click Network Operators and choose "automatically select preferred network" tada, Wind Home :D

If anyone is interested in unlocking all of the frequencies on their i337M just let me know and I'll post the full instructions. The above codes are what works for our Canadian version of the S4 (when following AWS unlock guides online).

Any S4 users having battery issues? Google services are killing me even after I've turned them off.
I'm new to this whole smartphone thing...

Shut off GPS and bluetooth if you're not using them, seems to help out a bunch. Is it a rogers phone? They have tons of junk running in the background. After flashing my phone with Telus and removing the My Telus app my battery when I get home from work is at usually 91%, where before with the Rogers junk it was around 70%!!

It is a Rogers phone. How do I tell what junk is running?

I just got it the other day so it is still vanilla. I googled a bit more and the main culprit seems to be the Google Play version. I updated to 4.3, shut off Google Now and after a full charge the Google Services no longer appears on the battery use details.

Would you recommend getting into this phone rooting business?
I'll go through this thread for recommended maintenance/performance apps but if you have some good ones off the top off your head that you'd like to share I'd like that.

Thanks for the heads up :)

I'm super noob to android as well, just got my first android device (S4) a few days ago :)

When I rooted my phone with SuperSU then the app update program said I was running a modified O.S. and wouldn't do the updates, so I un-rooted it.

You don't have to root your phone to convert it to Telus, but it'll do a full wipe of your phone. See the above instructions about dialing *#272*Phone’s IMEI Here# and see if TLS is on your list (might not be if google play edition). You can cancel that command with no effect on your phone.

Not sure how to check which apps are running in the background, was just reading on xda forums about the rogers bloatware and the telus not having any.

I'm going to try and install Cerberus giving it root access (without having to root my phone). Didn't work well so far, but once 2.4 comes out I think it'll work with droid 4.2.2 (not sure about 4.3).

It still is great, why wouldn't it be?

When i made the switch, is when jelly bean came out. Older OS'es to me was plain wack.

My wife got the iPhone 5, and she was saying the same old look...so i decided to give the S3 and Android a test run, and preferred the bigger screen...plus it syncs okay with my Mac, iTunes, etc...

Hell, i am even thinking to switch from Suzuki GsxR 1000 to the Yamaha R1.

I did make the switch from Honda to Acura, Damn!!!!!

I switched all kind of races in women too, it was easy.

Since I switched to the company's BB the nerd life was sucked out of me with such a ****** phone.

Worse part is that I don't get to upgrade to the z10 until next year

I have BlackBerry bold from work, and we can't upgrade to the Z10 until next year at the earliest, if at all, depends if our IT department determines that the security is good enough for the company. I still have my S2 for that exact reason.

Okay, so I found my answer while updating my wife's phone. Google Keep needed updating, so I read what was new, and noticed that reminders and location based, is new as of August 22nd 2013.
Looks awesome!!!! Will test later today..

Although I have Google Search(which added reminders/Location less than a month now), I tested it about a week ago, by setting a reminder with location,.. it didn't work and now I know why... Because I typed Pickering town Centre, when I should've put a physical address with street number.

Anyways, Google Keep looks better, and have more functionality than Google Search.

Was gonna last resort to Tasker.

Case closed.

BlackBerry security is second to none.

10.2 OS coming soon and it's a big step. For all you tinkerers, they just released an updated Android runtime program that allows pretty much any android app to run on BlackBerry with minimal hassel

When is BBM going cross-platform?

Very soon. Just today during a MAN U vs CHELSEA soccer game....... SAMSUNG advertised on TV that BBM was coming to the S4.

Oh, and the user guides for iOS and Android have been posted on line as well.
