Grey Bikes

Nice stable Gamma Guy.
Finding parts for my Canadian 86 rg250... I've ended up with
1) 87 TZR250 1KT (4yrs),
2) Aprilia rs250 (project status - 5yrs),
3) NSR250 mc18 (also in project status - 3 yrs)

When buying a 2 stroke a compression tester and a plug chop reading is critical.
More like 3 hrs of wrenching for every 1 hour of riding, and 3 weeks waiting for parts from other side of the pond, plus 3 months of hunting the no-longer-exist parts on world-wide ebay/japan yahoo, while watching your bike open up sitting in the garage.

The 3 to 1 ratio is kinna true but I would say its more for 2-stroker. I heard the 4stoker grey import is less wrench demand. That said, the 3 weeks waiting for parts and world-wide ebay/japan yahoo apply to all strokers.

Though out my 10 years ownership, I rode my bike maybe 20 times. Most of the time I have been waiting for parts, or waiting for more disposable cash in my bank account. Giving that I am a cheap ***** don't want to over-paid stuff doesn't help.

So who's down for an import ride?!?!

I'm always down for one! Maybe I'll start a thread in the rides/hookups section. I know there's enough people in the GTA with grey bikes to have a decent showing. I know a guy with a CBR250RR (MC22) and another guy with a CBR400RR (NC29) who would probably go.

Have got 2 VFR400R's myself, both are NC30's. The track bike is a work in progress, might start a build thread for that. It was my road bike for 3 seasons until I dumped it. My new road bike I've had for over 2 years and it just got a new set of front discs and new Bridgestone BT090's. Also, 2 days ago I hooked up an Ignitech Programmable Ignition that'll go on my track bike when it's ready. Right now it's running the HRC Formula 3 map and works surprisingly well on a bone stock bike. No more top speed limiter! :D

Cool bikes! Where did you source your front discs from ?(MetalGear?) I figured the front end on my MC19 is off of a 1992ish NSR250R (41mm, odd sized brake pistons, preload adjusters) but it also looks a lot like the VFR400R. Does yours have preload adjusters on top ?

I put an Ignitech ignition on my Ducati 900SS, it is literally plug and play. I will probably go the same route on the Honda some time in the future.

Nice stable Gamma Guy.
Thanks 2stroker.

How's the Ape treating you these days?
Sounds like you and Psycho_Biker are going to do a swap ride.
Would be cool if you both could give some feedback here after the swap ride.

DaveTheSave cool bike. Looks like some of the mods I've seen done over in Japan. Love the endurace look fairing/light.

I think I like these type of bikes more then the typical ss bikes out there. I believe many are 2 stroke or v4's. I can recall the hum on a friends (Pepsi edition?) Suzuki RGV 250.
What a bike......

With Nuak bringing lots of grey bike you guys can do a jdm big group ride. lol If youre palnning to buy a 2 stroke and it would be your only bike i would stay away and just go with 4 stroke. Less wrenching and all you do is start and go. No need to mix oil. :)

I got my discs from GF Racing UK. They should work with an NSR250 front end but I'd double check that with somebody or cross reference the part numbers. My forks are 41mm with preload adjusters though, they might just have different springs to the NSR.

The ignitech was worth the money. Flat spot is gone at 5000rpm and it feels more crisp in the midrange. Rev limit is up to 15,500rpm too.

Thanks 2stroker.

If we swap yeah for sure. I've always wanted to try a 250 2stroke race rep and the Ape is probably the best ever made.

Anyone got tips on finding a rvf 400 rear rim? Looking at possibly putting a rvf Swingarm on a project but cannot find a rim.

400greybike is your best bet. You have to join to see the for sale section though. Also try eBay.co.uk there might be something on there.

A friend just finished this rgv250 vj23.
He did all the paint, no decals anywhere.

Absolutely stunning bike in person.

Here is my NSR 250 SP (MC21) & CBR 250RR (MC22)

Grey Markets bikes are definitely unique - while race replicas always turn heads

not sure what turns heads first, when they hear the chainsaw 2-stroke motor buzzzzzz coming up or the smell of the burnt oil when you pass them all by....
