There is no point in filling your bike up that full, the extra gas you put in just spills out the overflow onto the ground ie. a waste of money.
Just put it on the stand and never fill it so full that the gas can splash up to the cap, if it does that it will also be going down the overflow tube.
Most people who do it, react with the "I'm careful so it'll never happen to me", line of thought. I've known a few people with missing digits, eyes or limbs, who thought that they were careful before their accident, doing things that they'd done "carefully" thousands of times before. I'd rather that others not end up that way, or with a gas spill accident.
How long does it take to get off your bike? 10 seconds? 20? 30?

There's no sense arguing over apples and oranges. Some people prefer to sit, some don't. I find I have more control over filling up when I'm sitting on my bike. It's just a personal preference, I guess.
Ummm how in hell it's safer to put gas on the bike while standing besides it? If you straddle it it prevents the bike from tipping over and you have a better view of the gas level rising in the tank.
Logically thinking, getting off the bike and putting it on the side stand IMO is much safer, the likelihood of a sidestand failure is much less than something happening to your footing or a spill causing panic. So the rule makes sense.
I do think that a rider should have the option though, and the option here is to buy gas elsewhere if you want to remain on your bike.
No big deal, their station, their rules. THATS LIFE!

Am I the only one that finds filling up very similar to sitting at a red light... If you drop your bike at either one of these place I'D say your Incapable of being on the road. Sell the bike and get a Cam-am spyder or something your capable of using safely. Then again a gas station is even easier then a red light due to the fact you ALWAYS Put Down the Kickstand!!

read all 5 pages and it seems many of you missed the point of the rant. op was cut off as he was pumping. his bike has side bags and a top case, not mentioned in the post but i know from outside the matrix. the cashier reasoned safety, op explained it would not be safe to try to get off the bike in that state.
if told to get off the bike before any transaction had taken place then yes op is wrong to complain, but in this case since the cashier's argument was for safety he should have let op get on with his business. being employed in ontario allows you to refuse any order from your employer if it is detrimental to your health and safety.
my old bike i could flat foot so i stayed on to fill up, my current bike im on my toes so i find its easier to get off then rest it on my hip for the last little bit.

Stuff happens man. My friend stopped on his brand new gsxr1100 and put his foot down on some sand, slipped and down they went. Nothing to do with being unskilled, just unlucky. I crashed my bike at the forks in 96 going 5 km/h and broke my pelvis, again sand on the road. Both nothing to do with being careless or unskilled. Just bad luck.
Bad luck at a gas station could be catastrophic, why not reduce he possibilities any way possible?

Get off your bike before opening the gas tank. Period. END. It really is a safety issue. It is not just Shell; ALL filling stations have this policy. Endurance racing has this rule, too. Rider must be off the bike before filling commences. Personally, I wouldn't even think of filling the gas tank while sitting on the bike.
The minimum-wage operator might not have handled this situation in the best way - perhaps. But ultimately, it is the original poster's fault for creating this situation in the first place.
