IMAX: When it's worth it, when it isn't.

So I have now seen 3 movies in IMAX. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, Dark Knight Rises and A Good Day to Die Hard.

Mission Impossible: Great experience. Sat in the 7th row and really got a feel for the size of the screen, quality of image and sound. It could have been slightly biased because it was my first experience, but I enjoyed it even more the second time.

Dark Knight Rises: Sat in the 5th row... just as good an experience as the first time

Good Day to Die Hard: Sat in the 10th row... didn't really feel as "big" as the other two times. Maybe I'm just getting used to it. Really enjoyed the movie, but maybe sitting in the far back wasn't the best idea.

So far rows 5-7 have been great for me. But it really depends on the movie. Die Hard 5 was completely in IMAX (no letterbox scenes like in DKR or MI). The movies that transition from letterbox to IMAX is somewhat odd, but reasonably seamless as it's usually just for basic dialogue scenes.

But then I saw Django and remember the regular widescreen movie experience. That seems to be the winner so far. I love the IMAX sound and seating, but the tall visual isn't as entertaining as the widescreen unless the movie calls for special scenes (ie: the skyrise scene in MI5 or city battles in DKR).

I would never see 3D in IMAX though, I'm not satisfied with the technology as it is and can't stand wearing those glasses for more than 5 minutes without having to adjust them.

Unless a movie is going to seriously kick *** or be known for special segments that compliments IMAX technology, I would stick with regular theatres. The main benefit I enjoy is the no tv commercials, maybe 1 or 2 previews at most (depending on the movie), 10 rows of seats vs 60 and the comfort level. I do like the smaller crowd (Django was packed up the ***, lucky I found a reasonably viewable seat) and assigned seating.

I just love my regular theater. All these other crap they're putting out to make money. I've tried them, didn't like them

Sent from my Phone, dont judge the grammar

I agree with the 3d statement. Unless it calls for it like avatar I would go see a 3d movie again. I've never seen IMAX but I was curious.

There's this new one (dunno what's it called) where the seats move.

I love IMAX and AVX theatres because you can reserve your seat. I buy it online and show up 5 min before showtime with no worries. The rest I could care less about... Screen, sound, etc. A regular screen is fine enough for me and sound depends on who set it up.

Nothing however beat the IMAX originals at the Cinesphere. You'd be clutching your arm rest of your seat sometimes. Never got that feeling at the smaller IMAX theaters.

Oh yeah, that Cinesphere is awesome.

I haven't tried VIP, but might soon. But I agree, favourite thing about IMAX is showing up 2 minutes before the movie starts and sitting in my seat that I chose.

I'm not interested in that seat moving crap... just another gimmick.

Home for me or drive in. Cant stand paying for a movie ticket and then having some ****** bag talk behind me for 2 hours.

i only go to the theater for a movie that i absolutley cannot wait to download.

the last movie i saw in the theater was The avengers 3D, before that, Star Trek,

Will not be going again until Man of Steel comes out.

What about Star Trek 2?

I love going to movies with my buddies. One time there were a few guys sitting in front of us debating the "optimum seating coordinates" lol. It became a joke every time we went to the movies but those are the seats we pick now.

yeah, i'll see star trek 2, but i said the " next " one will be man of steel.
i
think MOS will be out before ST2

IMAX is worth it alone for the reserved seating, not to mention the greater step height. I see everything I can in IMAX (including GI Joe 2, which was a piece of crap)

Tron in Imax was the best movie i have ever seen in 3d.

So funny when people sneak in and then get kicked out of the seats because they didn't know it was reserve seating.
