2013 touring: where are the CLOSEST mountain roads to Ontario?

Very cool bike congrats....that would just be a scoot for me around town. No way I'd make it to Niagara Falls or any further in one go...lol. I'm just lookin at upgraded exhaust, led lights and saddlebags...soft or hard not sure. On my laid back crusin machine...sucks gettin old so gotta find some luxury in it.

LOL i'm planning to go far and put many miles on the ER6N! ... the FZ8 is the second option actually ... it will depend on insurance :D

cheers!

just gotta be careful and if **** happens, then you deal with it!

Try dealing with a hospital and ambulance bill of many, many thousands. Travel insurance costs about three bucks per day. Only the foolish travel out of province without insurance.

CAA travel insurance for me was $37 for 2 weeks to Florida.

i JUST got off the phone with CAA and renewed my membership and upgraded to PREMIER... for like 144 bucks a year...
that gives me up to 600 dollars cost of food and hotel if i'm stuck even outside of Canada in the U.S.... accident or breakdown they'll tow my bike as well... sounds like a god deal to me :d

That is different from the travel insurance but yeah its a good deal.

SilverBullet is correct. You should have medical travel insurance, in addition to your CAA.

Hi guys,
i'm planning to do some serious touring this summer...

does anyone know where would be the NEAREST place to hit some mountain roads? basically the question is, which way should we head if we want to hit some mountains... east, west, or south?

Thanks :)

Buffalo and south on 219. Wander the roads from Ellicotville south to DuBois. East from there.
Lots of fun roads. Go see the NY Grand Canyon. More than enough in this area for a 3 day weekend.

Upper NY State as well in and around Lake Placid.

Extra out of country travel insurance is fairly cheap - although I now have it through my workplace, I use to pick up through CAA or my credit card. But in case of a motorcycle accident, that is covered by your motorcycle insurance - don't ask me how I know this :-( Still, you could fall off the side of a mountain hiking, or just get sick - its peace of mind as they are wheeling you out of the ambulance into the emergency room to be waiving your insurance papers (again don't ask me how I know this).

Wait, so travel insurance either through a third-party (like TD) or through work (I have GreenShield) WON'T cover you for an automotive accident? I thought any form of 'medical' coverage that might be provided by auto insurance was only there in case you didn't have actual travel insurance or your travel insurance benefits were not enough/ran out...

Just my 2cents, the roads south into Penn. get better faster than the long grind down the 401 to get to the Adirondacks. Also, it's been a while, but the last time I rode to Lake Placid etc. a lot of the roads even though they are twisty etc. had frost heaves and pavement cracks, all the stuff that goes with building a road where the ground freezes. My experience with Penn. West Va, Va etc. the roads aren't damaged by freezing so they have nice smooth surfaces for the most part. Even in northern Penn where you would think there is frost, I guess it just doesn't freeze as deep as further north. Anyway that's my advice for what it's worth.

Mt Washington is about 10 hour ride, great roads and sights.

Riding up the auto road would be something you sure wont forget !

Mt Washington? where is it? what state?

I wouldn't discount Mt Tremblent at all...some great roads around that area, extremely scenic and quite a good bit of decent pavement in the tourist areas. Get to places a little more north and east and those are definitely mountains, not sure what OP is on about.

+1 on Vermont.
I recommend crossing into NY State at the 1000 Island crossing, cut through NY passing through Lake Placid. Cross into Vermont south of Lake Champlain. Check out staying overnight in Stowe (Ski resort town so great deals in the summer) and ride through Smugglers Notch then anywhere in Vermont is great riding so getting to and from Mt. Washington is going to be beautiful.
Slabbing it on the 401 out just past Kingston isn't even that bad when you have something to look forward to!
I am hoping to squeeze this very ride into this season.
Stowe resorts have mtn bike specials, free bike rental with room. Early breakfast, trailhead right behind resort, ride the trails for a few hours, jump in pool, gear up and ride through Vermont for the rest of the day just trying to get lost!

Just be careful following highway signs in Vermont for "Newport" - there's more than one, lol.
