Airplane Watching

Great thread. Been to the war plane place in hamilton and loved it. I'm from the Kitchener Waterloo area and would love to see the planes. But man I hate driving in the GTA. Don't know my way around and right now and cant afford a gps this year. Always next year.

You can always head up to Base Borden - lots of planes on display around the base and two museums to check out. You just need to show ID at the guard house and you will have no problems getting on the base.

Unfortunately, it looks like they have closed up shop. http://ca.news.yahoo.com/canadian-air-space-museum-shut-down-toronto-boasts-205504613.html

Too bad as I don't think they ever got the proper exposure they needed to generate interest.

Yeah - I'm a member and went up there last night to see what was going on. The landlord is evicting everyone at 65 Carl Hall Road and wants to knock the building down and put up a multi-pad ice rink. By 8 pm last night the word was that the museum would be open today and we moved all the planes back into the museum.

I know that the manager met with the Board overseeing the park and not sure exactly what is going on, but my sense is there is some political pressure to save the museum coming to bear. That is just my sense and I have no real insight other than to say the locks were not changed last night and as of now at least, it is business as usual.

Latest word is a 6-month reprieve for all the tenants in the building and it is business as usual at the museum for now. Not sure what happens after that but at least everything will remain under-cover until a new site can be sourced. There is even a possibility that we can find another location at the Park.

My riding is done for a bit it seems. Riding in today my rear brake was feeling "odd". Turns out my rotor is chewed up - rear brake pads weren't sliding properly and wore down quickly to the rivets.:( It may take a short while to find a replacement rotor - so looks like I'm caging it for the next week or so.

I was wondering about the blue rashed 650R. Hadn't seen it in a while and thought the Hyabusa had replaced it....
That sucks for you. I only ride in a couple times a month. Most of this summer I was upgrading radios up in Sudbury so I didn't get to ride in. Didn't get much riding in this season since they won't let me toss the bike in the back of the truck or tow it to bring it with me. Company said too much liability to transport something not work related.

To stay on topic, here's a place I see people pulled over to watch the planes:

One of the lots in the circled area, I forget which one though, is lined up really well with planes landing so it'll look like they're going to land on you. The other day I was driving through there and some guy randomly stopped in the middle of the road as one was landing. I think he thought it was going to hit his car or something.

Convair is pretty fun to take at some slightly above legal speeds, too.

HUGE Enthusiast here. ;)

I am a perpetual student, I love older ragwings (not the flying buses mentioned here), especially aerobatic biplanes.

I build and fly and compete with model planes as one of my other hobbies

I love not only watching but also flying airplanes! I do think there's a connection between riders and pilots. They both seek a certain combination of thrill and freedom. I can't wait until this blasted snow melts so I can ride my "Centurion" (nickname of my new-to-me 100th anniversary Harley Softail) to go fly my Centurion (Cessna P210). It won't get any better than that! :-)

I sat in the jump seat in the cockpit of a 747 as it taxied and left Pearson one time, that was very neat. This was before 911...then I got a free seat in business class and drank champagne for 5h. I've also flown on one of the Queen's RAF fleet and ****** in her loo.

The queen's got her own f'ing "loo"...man..and here I was thinking I did good riding in a limo last night!

Disagree. Most professional superbikers (i.e. Matt Mladin) are into planes. The next buzz up from flying on the ground (superbike), is not driving on the ground, but flying in the air. The correlation has been there for decades.

Ill second that, I remember buying my first bike from this guy in georgetown. Gave up his bike because he was spending much more time in the air with his kit plane. I felt as if it were only natural progression. Ive always enjoyed the site of planes.

I didn't see anyone make the "Top Gun", "Ride into the danger zone", Interceptor reference.

The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum is one of my favourite haunts. I'm there at least three or four times every flying season to watch the Lancaster and you are correct - the sound of four merlins roaring overhead is beyond description.

I am also a member of the Canadian Air and Space Museum in Downsview - http://casmuseum.org/

If you have not seen the life-sized replica of the Arrow at Downsview, I highly recommend it!

I need to go again, this season.

I love planes. Been to Farnborough in the UK for the big show and the Paris air show too. Saw a Vulcan once in the UK, absolutely amazing plane....got any over here still? They are Avro Vulcan's which if I remember correctly used to be a Canadian company correct?

No Vulcan IIRC, but they have a Vampire. Last time I was there they were running kids into and out of the cockpit.

I race sailboats out in Lake Ontario, all summer we get watch the Lancaster and the Mitchell and all the Harvards do low level passes over the lake. I sail with a few pilots, AirCanada guy, a private jet guy from TO and a retired aviation engineer that volunteers at the Hamilton Museum. They have some cool insight into the planes and what life is like when your "in the industry"

When the airshow was on a fighter jet came out over the area in the lake we were all dialing up for a start and did a hot lap around the group of 80 boats with the burners on. The noise and effect was deafening, it was something I'll never forget.

I started flying when I was 14. Plan on building a RV-4 some day. However, I'm only 29 and my body will only be young enough for competitive motocross for a few more years. Once I step the MX riding back to occasional weekend fun (or not at all since I can't stand not being competitive) then I'll pick up my riveter and start banging on aluminum.

I've calculated what I've spent money and time wise with racing the last 5 years... I'd have a flying basic RV-4 by now.

I wouldn't say that just because someone is on a bike they are the aviation type, but there are for sure similarities... The best part of MX is flying!

Ever sit in the Lancaster's tailgunner position? I got a chance during an airshow years ago. You had to crawl over a bulkhead to get in. A tight fit even for my younger self, without flight gear, on a lazy afternoon. The pilots mentioned that tailgunners were basically screwed if the crew had to bail out in a hurry.

Not my site: http://goldwinggreg.blogspot.ca/2011/08/lancaster-bomber-in-nanton.html

Talk about close quarters!

I didn't realize CFB Borden was semi-restricted, though it makes sense. I accidentally detoured through there one Saturday. There was only one manned gate that I remember and they waved me through with a smile. Mistaken identity? The speed limit was really low (15 km/hr?) on the roads around the base.

The plane that you can see past the Vampire, in my second shot, is a Lanc. The tail gun position looked like a messy and uncomfortable way to commit suicide. No shoulder room, a wooden bench to sit on, and no bloody way out if things went south.

I was in the airline industry for eight years. First as a baggage basher then as an m2 AME. Other than the glamour of being around planes the whole industry is ****.
No money, VERY susceptible to downsizing at first hint of economic slowdown, crap hours, easily susceptible to AIDS (airport induced divorce syndrome).
As a rampie you work in ALL weather, breathe jet fuel and diesel fumes all day, while as AME you work with some nasty chemicals. I got out cuz i wanted to settle down and start a decent career. If youre young and single its a great lifestyle to be involved in the airline industry but the glamour fades away. I still miss it though.

With that being said. Prince is full of **** when he says that some random dude gave him a tour. Riiight. Like he's gonna risk jail time for bringing a person to restricted airside. Thats a huge no-no.

As a parking attendant you get all of the downside, without being able to see the planes close up. Did it for 5 years. The highlights invariably involved rare trips to the tarmac, around the time of the air show, and getting to see the aircraft from the "Battlestar Galactica" (comm van driven by the Airport Deputy General Manager).

Just to add, if you really wanna get up close and personal.

Derry road and Bramalea....Go south on Bramalea until it ends right by the FedEx shipping terminal. Depending on the wind and which way they are taking off and landing, this is the point on 05L runway that most planes touchdown or rotate. Def get to see the thrust reversers in full action along this point.
