Mount Everest, in two billion pixels

thanks, my dad just summitted everest this past climbing season so he will love to see this.

Took me a while to find the two groups of tents at camp3.Imagine the amount of debris around the bottom base camp, yikes!

Everest is pretty commercialized now; if you have money you can 'climb' it.

I plan on having my ashes blown to the top with a cannon, so I can be the first dead guy that 'climbs' Everest.

I don't think the handicap ramp is being built yet but money can buy an adventure. I was kicking around the thought of an adventure myself but when I googled for pictures of the "rare and exotic" destinations the pictures came back with loads of tourists everywhere one looked. Mostly the "I've been there, got the tee shirt and ate some Twinkies" crowd.

Everest I'm sure, has been made more accessable but still no walk in the park, way beyond my physical limits. Might get mugged for my Canadian made Twinkies :)

There is some truth to this, you can pay to attempt the summit but there are no garantees you will make it.

It costs a fortune, around $60,000 all together to attempt the climb, my dad failed the summit attempt 2 times until finally suceeding on the third, so if anything it is a huge money and time commitment.

Tho the climbs always happen around the ideal climbing seasons there is still a chance weather will stop you from ever getting past camp 3, on their second attempt they where held up in basecamp for 2 weeks due to constant avalanches.

You also don't just attempt everest with no prior mountaneering experience, most expeditions will not take you unless you have summited some other lesser peaks. There are some less reputable guide companies that will take you however some people simply can not handle high altitude situations, high altitude sickness will completely cripple you to the point you will have to be carried down the mountain.

My dad climbed behind the canadian woman that died on the mountain this year, he was saying how she clearly was unprepared and should not have been allowed to climb, lack of conditioning signs up high altitude sickness her guides should have forced her to turn back sadly she continued on and it killed her. One member of their summit team dropped dead on the descent from a high altitude anerisum.

Apparently the path is littered with frozen corpses. Can't see any in the picture though :(

So stamina, drive, determination, a willingness to endure hardship and the distinct possibility that you either a) wont make the summit, or b) die on the descent has nothing to do with it?

If I wore one, I'd doff my cap to anyone who got up and down Everest. I'd love to have a go one day.

Wow, base camp is a city.... goes to show how 'commercial' the climb has gotten.

That doesn't detract from the massive individual effort it takes to summit, though.

You'd be doffing a plenty to this guy - who has been to the top 21 times.

I doubt it's easy but also standing on one foot for a day would be a tough thing to do - although a lot safer, cost less and be as meaningful as climbing Everest.

I wonder how many would climb Everest if you weren't allowed to tell anybody afterwards i.e. no bragging allowed.
