I always found this made the problem worse. It seemed to just get stickier and harder, and the more elbow grease you use the more sticky it becomes.

I use brake fluid. It's surprisingly effective.

+1 I used it to remove every sticker on my bike that wasn't clear coated over. Works great.
I know someone who used this method to remove stickers and has a melted front fairing.

Brake cleaner - very effective when it comes to glue residue.
Safe for clearcoated paint and most exposed paints as well. Never hurts to spot check if not sure.
They generally come in spray cans so easy to handle.
Make sure you use one without chlorides though because those may eat the paint in no time.
