why does the exhaust need to be so huge?

To meet government standards for noise in Europe and North America without restricting the power of the engine.

Two ways to make a muffler quiet ... make it restrictive, or make it big.

Those extra 36cc's gotta go somewhere! :)

Does a dealer actually have inventory they are selling, for immediate pickup?

they better come out in red within a year or two...
and Akrapovic will surely make a nice exhaust soon enough.

Had I not bought a bike this year, this would've been my next bike. Do I not see any steering damper?

No steering damper, it's been removed. The ZX-10 has it :(

Needs a new damper mount too, the tank mount bolt hole was moved (someone already tried).

my god! what a copy of the zx 10R...the previous gen 6r was sooo nice....

pontiac transam, chev corvette with those pop up lights and now,,,2008-2012 ZX6R ...

all the good looking machines passing me by....

Well JohnnyP636 what do you think?

Nice bike, and again some new features from Kawi....Traction control, FCC slipper assist clutch, longer stroke instead of bigger bore to make 636cc...New BP-SFF forks, mono bloc calipers, 10mm larger 310mm front rotors...ABS model if you want to buy it...

I'll let you know what I really think in about March when the dealers have them in stock, I just sold my 04 636 yesterday to put the money towards a 2013....In 08 I ordered the 09 early and had it in Dec of 08, but I think I'll wait this time and try to get a better price when they have them in stock....

I own 2 03/04 636, and a 2009 ZX6R, and have ridden and worked on many 05/06 and 07/08 models.....The 03/04 was my favorite ZX6R Ive ever owned...The 09 is a great bike but lacks the 636 engines power, and thats the only reason I like the 03/04 better....This new 2013 should make it my favorite bike, having the chassis of the 09 but the 636 engine...

Needs more kawi green.

Why did Kawi abandon the 636 engine? Was it because of racing activities? (i.e. they had 2 bikes - one with the 636 and one with the 600 [the limit for most supersport series]) If so, what has changed?

Possibly demand, a lot of people I know were not impressed when they dropped the 636....I bought an 09 and would not consider buying another 600, but since its a 636 I sold my old bike and am buying one...A lot of my friends have 2 ZX6R's, and prefer the 636's much more...So its not just me

I hated the 07 and 09 zx6r I rode. I still haven't been able to replicate the feeling of the 05 636.

Back when the 636 was offered previously, it was alongside the 599cc ZX6RR intended to be the roadrace version (because 600cc was the hard limit for the classes available at the time). That would have required two separate ECU calibration exercises and two separate emission certifications in each market that the bike was sold ... this is not cheap. This time, they have opted for 636cc only and I'm sure it's to save development, tooling, certification, and production costs that they have eliminated the <600cc option.

And now, the question under discussion: what happens to the roadracers. The 636cc is not legal for any supersport (i.e. 600) class that I know of. They all say 600cc max for 4 cylinders, 675cc max for 3 cylinders, and a varying but larger number for 2 cylinders. I'm sure Honda, Yamaha, and Suzuki would have a thing or two to say about any proposal to increase the 4-cylinder displacement limit. My guess is that the new 636 will be excluded and the roadracers will have to continue using the 2012 and prior models.
