Attention dude/chick who parks his Black Gixxer 750 (?) 2008+ Downtown (Shoei helmet)

That's a nice Shoei helmet with a mirror visor hanging off the passenger helmet. Some old guy I saw a few minutes ago thought so too as he was eyeing that helmet pretty hard while having an unzipped empty back pack on his back, which looked like it was ready to be filled. Since I had to go get lunch I told some cop that was watching a construction site nearby to keep an eye on him but I would not leave that nice, $500 helmet on the bike unattended if I were you. Just sayin'. Please, stay safe.

WHo's the genius MOD that merged my thread with this! Now it's practically guaranteed that this person won't see it! Good job! Could have at least waited a few hours! Seriously, WTF?!?!

EDIT: Seriously, you try to help people and this is what you get!? Sometimes people's property is more important than keeping the forum "tidy". WOW!

waiting for the "my helmet was stolen " thread tomorrow.

While we're on this topic..how common it is it for helmets to be stolen off bikes? I never just hang it off the mirror, I hook it under the rear seat. On a Ninja 250r it seems like a flat screwdriver could pry the seat up just enough to slide the helmet out

Fairly uncommon, depends on the area

Generally, only leave your lid on the bike if there are other riders around. If not, take it with you.

I will occasionally leave my helmet on the bike when going into a store or something but when i'm at work for 8-9 hours I take it with me. When I go into a gym I take it with me too and put it in a locker. Even when I leave it I prefer to at least bring a regular lock and lock it to through the d-rings to the passenger peg.

I don't think it happens that often but it DOES happen from time to time. Especially downtown where there is plenty of homeless willing to do almost anything to make a buck. I once had some bum come up to me with an open face helmet, the kind a lot of cruiser riders wear, asking me if I want to buy it. And again, this guy today looked like he was definitely on a "hunt" and I bet if me, and/or the cop wasn't nearby it would be gone.

There's the price of a new lid plus you can't ride home. So the bike sits in never never land until a buddy brings you a lid or you go get one if there's a shop nearby. It's a PITA carrying the thing but it beats the alternate.

There were also cases of bums and drunks pissing into lids

How do you guys lock your helmet to your seat?

Some of the bikes have a bike lock under the rear passenger seat which is just kind of a rod that sicks out that you put the d-rings through and lock the seat over it. My monster had something like this but it was too far under the seat to use on its own so it also came with a bit of wire with two loops on each end to put through the d-ring and through this rod.

My current bike has nothign, so like I mentioned, I would just bring a regular lock like this:

....and basically just put it through the d-rings and the hole in the heal guard on the passenger peg (or could use any thin part of the bike like sub-frame).

Yup - just to add to what Roasted said, my bike has something like this, but it's under the seat rather than by the footpeg:

Basically you loop the cable through the D-rings and hook both ends of the cable on to that little iron loop (it's not fully closed off) - then you close the seat on top of the cable and the helmet just hangs off the side. The cable is reinforced/heavy duty and not as easy to cut as you might think. Not a perfect system but better than hanging it off a mirror.

locking through D-Rings wont prevent theft. They can and WILL cut off the straps at the d-ring. If you must lock to bike, just put lock cable through the visor opening and lock it up.

Just google "650r helmet lock" and you'll find a few threads walking you through how to do it.

Every time someone says "my bikes doesn't have a helmet lock" I usually prove them wrong. 95% of the time it explains it in the user manual.

That video is so stupid, the guys bike has 2 helmet locking latches under his passenger seat. One on each side of the bike, that you can clearly see it in the video...And yet he uses a gun lock to lock his helmet to a dirty *** passenger peg...LOL

Even when the seat is on the bike, you can see the cut outs on each side of the passenger seat where the helmet straps are supposed to come out of from where they are to be latched under the passenger seat...

I just don't take the chance that it will get grabbed. I either lock it, or take it with me. Same with my jacket. Not worth the risk.

The Video is not stupid but your comment is. The reason he does not use the helmet lock provided is because all you need is a knife to cut the strap and away you go with the helmet. This way is much more secure. That's the reason for this video.
Also on some bikes like mine you can pry open the back seat cover to release the helmet from the lock. So for this reason I don't use the lock provided on the bike I just take helmet with me.
