I am thinking the ferry route.
also: speed. i generally do limit in towns, +10 on 45 and 55 rurals, +15 on 65 and interstates. cool?
just got home today from a 5 day run through VT, NH, RI, ME, MASS, NY, CT and did notice a lot of troopers and sheriff vehicles.... What worked for me was to keep at the posted max within any town or village whether I was near any other vehicles or not, but be careful cuz they can be different:25,30,35,40. Out on the highways (50-65 mph posted) I was going whatever the flow was ... Through Boston the traffic was whipping along at 145 kph ....
As for the ferry, check the schedule as it leaves from Kingston to Wolfe Island hourly and when you get there go right near the ramp and wait there with your bike ... Don't have to line up... They'll squeeze you in somewhere. that ferry is free. Any time I've gone that way the small ferry from WolfeIsland to Cape Vincent is usually there or soon. I assume they do their best to time it with the other ferry. it's small, maybe a dozen cars can fit and it costs 7 bucks ...which seems steep considering the hour long ferry ride from Burlington VT is 6.90. The guards at the Cape Vincent USA post seem a lot friendlier too...but at the Canadian side I have been pulled aside twice for a secondary search by the older female Boarder Officer which is no big deal cuz I never try to seek anything, but is a giant pain in the *** because it then causes you to miss the Wolfe ferry to Kingston which puts you an hour behind...
if you find the roads around Lake Placid a bit too busy, there are some nice ones just a bit north of there around Silver Lake and Au Sable Forks ... Not as much elevation changes but still some nice smooth pavement through curvy hills etc.
A bonus for any riders venturing around the Au Sable Forks area and then doing some of northern Vt, most of the roads ruined by last years's Hurricane Irene are now nice new smooth pavement.... BTW... Noticed lots more wild turkey during daylight hours so always watch for wildlife...
