Buying used process

No one is saying that it's "necessary" for you to get the UVIP, but it is being strongly recommended that you do for reasons already mentioned.

If the seller is reluctant to get you a UVIP himself, regardless of the excuses he gives, then I'd be somewhat suspicious. But hey, it's your time and money.

I get it.

The seller MUST get the UVIP. They are required by law to provide this to you if it is a private sale. The sale price, etc, would also be written in by the seller and this is required to be provided at service ontario along with the ownership when transfering title. You will also pay the taxes at this time.

You can transfer title without insurance, but you will need insurance to get a plate. If have not had a safety done, they will give you a temporary plate. it's just a normal plate with a "T" sticker on it. This will give you 10 days to get the bike saftied. Once this is done, simply bring the certificate to any service ontario, and they will provide you with a new sticker and you're good to go.

it's pretty simple really

Yea sorry i did give you some bad info there its been a while. You can regsiter without incs. But as stated to plate you need insurance. I think i got my ins and then didnt everything all at once at service canada. I think you have to take your ownership back to the ins (in somecases) for their records.

But yea ge the UVIP

Done deal. Paid $20 for the UVIP at registration, transferred plates from last bike, after getting insurance. Had a private bill of sale between myself and seller that was sufficient for the process. Service ON people didn't even blink when I told them I didn't have UVIP.

Sadly, its because they see it far too often.

Just an FYI guys, I'm good with the seller. Given the circumstances, it was easier to go this way.

I should have clarified the question, "suppose you know/trust the seller and he doesn't have a UVIP yet, do you HAVE to have to make him go get one?" answer is an official NO.

There was no way I would do this with some random.

They don't blink because YOU are assuming the risk to be on the hook for someone else's loan, not them, so they really don't care.

Can someone clarify that a used bike must have a safety regardless of the age?

Say 10 months old for example.

Thanks

That's fine IF he's the original owner. There could still be liens from owners before him. Bottom line, when there is money concerned, don't trust anybody!!!

Here's what my buddy did. He ended not asking the seller to get UVIP, paid $20 later. Whatever, his choice.
But he did pay $7000 back then for Yamaha R6 but on the bill of sale he put $3000 and they didn't even question him at DMT.

How risky is it to lie about the price on bikes?

I'm looking at the bike that is going for $6300 and right away seller said "Don't worry, I'll put $5300 on the bill of sale to save you some tax money."
I would hate to be caught in situation if they start digging but I also would love to keep some money aside for some gear that I want to buy.

My main concern is if they go by some kind of blue book value. I keep getting different versions for my question. Let's say the bike I wanna buy is 2008 Honda CBR600rr with 6000km, $6300. What would be a good price to tell them on the bill of sale? $3000?

Lie at your own risk. That's about all there is to it. No one here is going to publicly approve of you committing fraud.

Re: Retail sales tax on Used Vehicle

Ontario MTO said:
Retail Sales Tax
You must pay sales tax when you buy a used vehicle privately. The amount of tax is on either the purchase price or the vehicle's wholesale value, whichever is more.

What is the "wholesale value"?

Wholesale value is based on the Canadian Red Book, which lists the wholesale and retail values of used vehicles. This book is an accepted industry standard used by car dealers, insurance companies and other provincial governments.

Be reasonable with the stated purchase price or they will take the Canadian Red Book value instead.
