I'm heading to the cottage for a family reunion this weekend so I've taken Friday off and have decided to do a mini 'tour day'. I have been limited to much shorter day rides and commuting due to and extrodinarily busy summer, so I want to get some decent miles but not bite of more than I can chew. Here's what I have so far. I'm hoping to get some input from the seasoned touring guys who know the back roads better than I do.

maybe try taking Airport rd north (you'll be passing it going through Hockley)..North on Airport Rd to Side Road 20 (River Rd.) all the way west to hwy 124, head north to Hwy 9. Go east past Creemore and you can pick any of the main roads east you want to get to the 400..others probably will suggest other routes...my 2 cents on what seems like a bit of a straight run to start.

Wow that is an ambitious route!! I feel like I'd have to carry a jerry can for that one lol. I didn't think about big chute and may have to add that in

I didn't even know that river rd was there. I think that I might go forks to 124 and then river rd WB to avoid back tracking and cut out hockley all together. There is also an odd looking aviation something or other out there that I'd like to visit hahaha

Sounds good, you're leaving Friday which means enforcement pressure should be relatively low. River reminds me of the 507. Have a good trip.

Note: I've decided to go 407 to Mississauga Rd to start as I'm planning on leaving around 6am and want to try and beat as much traffic as possible. That, and I grew up 1km off of 15 sideroad so everytime I visit my folks I rip thru the 15 and speyside and georgetown etc.
(thoughts are still welcome!)

Get on Airport Road and go north. You want to get around Base Borden so at CashTown hand a right and then go down to the Flashing Light. Turn left and go north to 26 and take a right A few KM down there is Horseshoe Valley Road on the left. Take that out to the 400 then exit # 189 (Bala Exit) Take OLD HWY 69 all the way to Parry Sound then out 124 I live in Hockley have a cottage in Dunchurch and that's the quickest and best most scenic route to get there

I would take 38, 7, 632 and 118 instead 400 north, but that does add a fair bit of time

I would spend more time in the Muskoka's than snaking your way through Orangeville area, because there are too many straight roads with stop lights and small towns... I'd make quick time up the 400/11 to Southwood 13 and then have some fun from there. Takes about the same amount of time, but with many more curvy roads packed together to for the last 4hours...

Personally I think Big Chute is boring... too much straight roads for a little bit of twist at the end. The last section on this route is Old Nipissing road which has some gravel on it, but it is as technical or more so than the 518.

Looks long straight and boring.. Dude your missing the best of what Muskoka has to offer. Gimmie a min and ill fix it for you ;)

I really appreciate all of the suggestions. I was just going to slab it back home but I think that I might take one of the routes up and then another home on Sunday. I'm thinking that the Shane/booya route might be a better Sunday option to try and stay off of the highways and avoid some of the traffic.
1 more question for you touring guys.....Should I put a couple of litres of sapre fuel in my pack or are there enough fuel options when I'm off the highway. And remember I'm not on a touring machine, this is all being done on a pretty thirsty R6 lol.

There are enough stations along the route. Just make sure to fill up before evening because I think most gas stations aren't 24 hours up north. Grab a map or even better a gps and you're set !

I was on Southwood Sunday and it is in terrific shape! Almost no sand on it. Mortimer's Point Road is as nice as it gets as well.

I was on Big Chute a few weeks ago and it is in very rough shape. (And this is from a guy riding a V-Strom that doesn't mind rough roads.)

Ya, I have a gps but the battery is shot and I have no 12v outlet to keep it running and no ram mount so I think I'm going to go all old school and tape directions to the tank. I'm planning on being on the road from 6am to 1pm so the stations should all be open, my concern was being out in god's country and trying to find 91. I've been travelling the highways between here and sudbury since I was a kid, I've just never really gotten off the beaten path.

My plan as it stands is to do the forks, river rd, big chute, 518, 520 route there and the 13 and so on route back. Is big chute not worth taking right now or is it okay just go easy?

Big Chute is fine to take but if you'll be on Southwood Rd 13 please please take it easy, especially if it will the your first time on it.

So I ended up with this route on the way up - http://goo.gl/maps/oNuDZ
I wanted to say thanks for everyone's suggestions and help. The forks were the forks, and river rd was a bit tricky at 7:45 am because the sun is right in your eyes and through the trees it works a bit like a strobe light. The trek from river road to big chute was a bit boring but fine. I thought that big chute was a mistake because it was SO rough but then it smoothed out and was fun. Saw a deer and had a pick up pull out of a driveway right in front of me tho so it's a good thing that I was riding at a spirited pace but by no means wrecklessly. Old 69 was meh, but tally ho - swords was a great little surprise! I enjoyed the technical part of 518 a lot more than the sweepers towards 11 but they were fun as well as the ones on 520.
All in all it was a great ride up and I was able to do it in 5 hours flat with only 2 fuel stops and 1 stop to snag the Ontario photo tag in Shelburn.
I was planning on taking 13 home on Sunday but I left late, I was tired, and less than 1km from my cottage I took a wasp to the face which then got inside my helmet and stung me 3 times in the face before I could get my helmet off so I just slabbed it all the way home. It was boring but I wasn't in a great head space at the time and thought it would be safer to just book it home.
Anyway.....Thanks again to everyone who suggested routes and roads. I will be looking at this again the next time I ride up that way.
Cheers
