Middle weight upgrade, best value and performance...

What about your gear? has it changed much? If you are wearing a full leather jacket.... It's going to get hot.

You might want to try a mesh jacket like http://www.canadasmotorcycle.ca/joe-rocket-pheonix-11-0-mesh-jacket.html I have this one or the 10. I find it keeps me quite cool.

Although I've never had the issue of heat being redirected to me on my 2010 GSXR600. I am looking to swap out my GSXR600 for something that will not kill my back on long haul rides... but that's another story ;)

The next thing you know, you've outgrown your motorcycle gear and you're riding around like a squid LOL!

Sadly, I find myself commuting often without gear these past couple of weeks. I actually rode home today on both the Gardiner and 427 in my jeans and a golf shirt at highway speed. :( I kept thinking to myself... what if? You're such and idiot? Better to be hot than...

I said I would never be one of those guys, but a few of you have seen me on short trips in my shorts and T-Shirt on my bike.

I own two helmets, 2 pair of leather gloves, riding boots and a mesh jacket which I wear most often when I'm planning to ride in groups on unknown roads. I also own a "glow in the dark" spine protector. LOL (Actually it's highlighter yellow colour)

In my wish list I'm looking to get full racing leathers. I've tried a couple of times to schedule racer5 and FAST, to do the intro to track but work keeps getting in the way of the scheduled dates.

So basically it depends on what I'm planning to do and where I'm planning to go these days. The past posts when complaining about the heat, I was wearing full gear less the riding pants.

But as others have mentioned, they were very hot days and different bikes dissipate heat differently. So you might end up with a 1000cc engine bike and not feel as hot compared to riding a 250cc.

That's the thing about being new to this game, you learn something new every day. :)

PS. I just looked at the jacket and that's very similar if not the same Joe-Rocket jacket I own. It's a great jacket for both hot and cold days. Not so good in the rain from keeping your pocket contents dry though. :)

Can I just add that no all new experiences are new lessons. Sometimes, a ride down a street on a warm day that makes your rear tire squiggle when you let off the throttle is just... a ride down the street on a warm day that makes your rear tire squiggle when you let off the throttle.

Until you have enough miles and experiences to start to see patterns emerge, or to be able to either verify or dismiss some of the (mis)information you're bound to hear, you shouldn't be too quick to draw conclusions.

I don't want to piss you off, I actually like your contributions here. But I worry about the way you seem to be so sure of yourself after keeping up on a ride with older riders, or after buying a new bike and riding it around a bit and reporting "the way it is" style about the bike, or jumping to conclusions about how engine heat affects sport bikes. You're gonna get yourself in over your head some time.

My 2c is, take all these observations and put them on a shelf for a while until you can verify what you think you know again a few more times. Then come on here and share them with us!

Confidence is just part of who I am. :) I'm not Pi$$ ed off at yours or anyone else's comments. In fact I agree with your comments.

My intent is to report on my own personal experience and that's just what it is. My own experience. Based on those experiences, I welcome anyone to agree or disagree, correct or confirm what I'm writing here. We all have an opportunity to change our perspective given time. Today I may feel one way and tomorrow another. I'm still the same person just have a different experience based on perspective etc...

So I will respond and post as I experience things today. I welcome any fruitful discussion that may come from it.

Oh and by the way. I am the $ H I T!! LOL

BTW, with respect to SS bikes overheating...

My bike runs 101 degrees sitting in traffic. I suppose that's normal for a 600cc SS. So it's not really overheating, it just runs hotter than my 250. It's certainly more noticeable on warmer days. Given the choice, I prefer to commute with the 250. That's for sure.

Rogo if you want to stay cool and still wear gear I suggest looking into one of those evaporative cooling vests. I got an alpinestars one for $ 35 and it's not perfect but works for about an hour. I used it for a day I had to sit in stop and go highway when it was 37 degrees a week or so ago and I'm glad I had it. I was able to wear a jacket overbite and still feel cool. Once they start to dry out though it gets hot quick.

Dude! Send me the link! That's sounds like a bargain for $35 bucks.

welcome!

I got it on ebay so I don't have the link anymore. I doubt the alpinestars was the best but I just wasn't willing to spend more than that. they get mixed reviews. all depends on how you're going to use it. for shorter runs in the hour range I think they're ok. or if you're able to rewet them (tim hortons sink?) I tried one of those neck rolls as well that you soak and it stays cool for 24hrs, it was cool (neat and cold), but not big enough and tended to untie itself from my neck. plus I felt silly wearing a little blue neck roll with a bow tied at the front.

This really sparkles my interest, lol! Anyone know if these can be worn under leather?

You wouldn't want to wear it under leather, unless it was perforated. You'd get best results under Goretex or mesh gear, to allow for evaporation.

Nice. By reading the ad, one would think that at least one set of "cool packs" is included with the vest...hmm... seems like a very good product though.

You do, in fact, get one set with the vest. Spares are handy if you'll be out longer, and have a cooler. The 'nail stop plates' are extra.

I'd be pleased to show you why you haven't outgrown your 250. (I see your 250, and raise you a 125.) Even better, take the Racer5 track school www.racer5.ca and see for yourself why you haven't outgrown that bike.

Stay on the 250 for at least a full year AND take the track course.

Hmmmm.

SV650 or 650R sound more appropriate for you, IMO.

101 is pretty damn cool on an SS bike, a hot day in slow traffic and you can easily hit 110, and dont have to really worry until it gets over 115. The 250 is a way smaller engine, even at the same temp it`s going to give off less heat. I also think that commuting on a race bike is kind of missing the point, but thats another thread.
