how often do you check your mirrors?

i used to do it every 15 seconds or so but lately its been once a minute.
Then, twice yesterday i have a car pull right up next to me in my lane.

First as i am waiting to turn right at a stop sign. i am in left tire track for best angle and woman pulls up next to me in my lane (it was single lane only)
Then south on Yonge i am cruising at speed of traffic again in left tire track of the inside lane closest to oncoming traffic watching hard for left turners and then again, a woman appears right beside me in my frick'n lane!!

Both got an earfull from me (and i will assume it was a coincidence that both were women).

i considered on the Yonge street incident that i may have been better in the right tire track to block the lane to my right but i believe she may have pulled right up beside me in my own lane anyway and i like to ride in the left track so that cars on my left can see me behind the car i am following.

Anyway i am back to checking my mirrors every 15 seconds again and recommend the same.

ride safe

If you making a right, why are you in the left tire track?

Right turns, move to the right tire track.

Its part of how I ride, knowing my surrounding. Its just something I do and any rider should do regularly. I have no idea how often I check, but its regularly as I always know whats coming up behind.

Never had that happen to me before, maybe your leaving too much room for other people to just get in your own lane? Whenever i ride on a lane, there is no room for the other driver to squeeze pass me unless they cross the dividing line.

Blocking position? And doesn't it have something to do with proper turns?

Left turn you start on the right tire track, right turn you start on the left tire track.

Making a right I'm on the right-mid side to block cars from squeezing past me, or I start on the left side and angle my bike so it's across the lane, again blocking a car from turning in the same lane.

What Sushii said though, maybe you're too close to the line. My left/right blocking position isn't to the extremity of the lane, its enough to block someone from coming in, and enough to not allow anyone from sharing the lane.

Ask yourself this?

Left/middle tire tracks for right turns, are you leaving yourself open to being rear ended?

Left turns right side tire track....is this positioning that you are in the most visible to on coming traffic?

You will get rear ended regardless of which tire track your in if you were getting rear ended... So i dont see how using the left tire track to make a right turn leaves myself open to being rear ended.
Left turn right tire track = most visible to oncoming traffic... You may be more visible to oncoming cars if you weren't first in line but if your first in line, right tire track will be more visible. Also using the left tire track for left turns also enables some drivers to squeeze past you to get infront of you.

Bro, everything about riding is a risk.

No tire track is perfect....

But it's up to you to decide what positioning put you at least harm.

There is reasoning why riding in those lane that you choose is not wise.

after many years of riding I'm still paranoid and will check my mirrors a lot more on a bike than on a car.

Ya second this. When make a right turn, stay on the left track but angle the bike to block the whole lane.

When i need to make a right turn, i position myself in a 45' angle blocking almost the whole lane. And for left turn, right tire track

To the OP, I check my mirrors an awful lot... I like to know who's behind me.

To the rest of this thread, I was blocking in the left tire track and had a guy pull beside me trying to share my line while riding in a straight line recently. He had to have been 70+ years old and after he did it twice and ignored my wtf-are-you-doing gestures, I just got the eff outta there.

What gets you a pass on your M test doesn't always apply afterwards. Assess every situation and decide.

never... i kicked mine off

I mount my GPS and video camera on mine with Velcro straps. Mirrors are the cheapest and best mounts available!
