Am off work, bored, and thinking I'm going to grab a proper mountain bike tomorrow. Anybody know where there are some good trails or better yet want to go for a ride?

Sweet! I will quite likely take you up on that. Any suggestions for shops to check out? I'm looking for something probably in the 4-600 dollar range, nothing too serious just front suspension disc brakes and a good gear change mechanism.
Your location says beaches. There's places closer to you like Seaton, Durham Forest, or Ravenshoe, but if you really want to ride near Hamilton there's Waterdown trails, Dundas Valley Conservation Area, and North of Sydenham Rd.

No one here cares about your problems!
For that budget with those specs I'd look used. Pinkbike.com is a good place to start. Or post a wanted ad on GTAM. FMJ and others seem to have extensive collections of bikes that they occasionally pare down.

Lol sad part is I actually made the move intentionally. Actually I just hate the gta, so working out of hamilton and living where I have some space is a dream.
My buddy is telling me he can probably get me a really good deal through direct buy but if I order it tomorrow ill have to wait a few weeks for it. I think going through a bike shop is going to be too expensive
I second Dundas valley.
Before you go and do anything dumb, let's sort it out. What brakes? Fork? Have you chamfered the leading edges of the pads yet? Cleaned/deglazed the pads and cleaned the pads and rotors with brake cleaner? I've been running discs since I got my first MC Pro Stop in 93 and I'm pretty good at sorting them out if you need a hand.

Depends on what shop, what you want, and most importantly if it's on the floor and how long it's been sitting there.
Going for beers occasionally with the owner helps, too.

It's the 29er..XTC 1 with the Elixir 5's..it's the rear. The front is stellar. And it's not actually squealing, it's vibration. It comes and goes. I've recentred the caliper manually by eye, did the suggested tightening methods (spin, stop, tighten..forwards and backwards..), cleaned..haven't resorted to chamfering the pads yet.. I believe Avid's suggestion is to replace the rotor with a sturdier unit. I'll try chamfering the pads and re-clean again. See if that helps. They are nice in the rain though..

So direct buy has the diamondback response *comp* model for 580 but with a 3-5 week delivery period. Haven't had a chance to really compare yet as I don't have interweb (on my phone now) again till morning but I don't think its that good of a deal.
I haven't been on a mountain bike in 10 years (am 25 now) and am just looking to have some fun on trails. Looking for something with no rear suspension, hydraulic disc brakes, and a gear changing system that's effortless and will last a long time.
