Day Trip Ideas?

Hey Guys,

I have one day off a week (if I'm lucky) and I'd like to spend it exploring other towns/cities/etc.

Last week I went to Niagara and I'm looking for more things like that...sightseeing, attractions, & all the good stuff. I spent another day in Buffalo before (so crossing the border isn't an issue).

But basically, I have to leave in the morning and be back at night.

What towns/cities are popping? Any recommendations for me to check out?

TIA

Thanks for the link!

But I'm not necessarily looking for events (I'd probably rather hit up events with friends or other people). I guess I'm looking to see landmarks and go sightseeing. I like seeing new cities and just riding around (even if it's just the downtown area of a city).

I like to explore and I've seen a good portion of Toronto/Scarborough so I'm looking to branch out, I guess.

There is always the usual: Algonquin, Wasaga Beach, Tobermory, Port Dover/Long Point, etc...

Buy this book (or get it from the library) and visit some of the sites

Also, look at the related books on Amazon (ghost towns, waterfalls etc) for some more ideas.

That's a great idea! I've never seen/heard of that book! I looked online as the book's sold out currently at amazon and google/maps has them listed out but with 1 liner descriptions only:

What I would do is pick a place, town etc, then go to google maps and try and plot a route to that location. Use references from the Ontario Riding roads maps etc to help make your decision.

I've done rides with other riders and they just seem to know the major riding roads, but there are a ton of nice side roads, scenic or otherwise rather than taking the main road/highway.

Here are some ideas and Places to check out:

* Peterborough Locks (go via lakeshore East to Port Hope then northern route for nice turns and sweepers.)
* Creemore - Theres an old school arcade here (www.justpushplayarcade.com ) and the Creemore Brewery (Great for a tour) Lunch at the pub is ok

* Shelburne. You can check out the Windmills up in this area. A couple of them are right near the road. Take 89 west out of Shelburne and look for them :)

* Bala - Nice area. Would be great midweek!

I have made up several dozen routes just based from looking at the roads on Google maps.

This is pretty much how I'm going to do a PA trip soon.

cheers

The maps at the top will give you good day trips - been riding the area for 30+ years and still find interesting places.

Tobermory is a nice day trip but watch the fog.

Going over to Arthur is a nice ride on the back roads and get up in a sail plane for a thrill

Not far from The Forks of the Credit.

Dover and then go west along the lake and take some of the backroads there to Long Point. Perch at Dover for lunch and then a winding ride along the lake. Bit boring on the way home.

Boogie north to Huntsville on the slab then have fun in the back roads in either direction.

Prince Edward County to the east.

Stoney Lake area to east and north.

With long day light hours - as long as you get out early you have quite a range.

Email me mid june when I get back and I'll be happy to do some rides - I have flexibilty - Mississauga based.

Kiwi - yeah I'm shocked that some rider's idea of a good ride is hours on main highways.....
some of my best rides have been on a couple hundred k in 7 hours - but interesting back roads the whole ride.
I tend to go where the wind blows me once I'm in a decent area.

There is a giant Toonie in Campbellford worth checking out. Lots of great roads in Northumberland county too. Also, the Big Chute marine railway is a cool site to see and a great day ride.

Best bet is Just go out and ride! Pick a city/town/place the night before & google things you can go see/do there.

The wife and I have started Geocaching. www.geocaching.com If you have a portable GPS (or cell phone with one in it) you can look for caches in any city in the world. There's like 100 around York region alone. It gives us a reason to head to a new place we haven't been before and it's a great way to see some stuff thats off the beaten path. Look it up, read about it and give it a try. Theres something like a million caches out there, theres about 8 around Kandahar Afganistan but I wouldn't open them :blob6:.

You guys are awesome. I can't believe Kingston slipped my mind! I can't wait to do these (I'll take pictures when I do)

I'm also gonna pick up the book Matthew suggested.

I end up in Elora at least once a month in the summer. Something about sitting on the edge of the gorge with a cohiba makes me happy.

Lots going on at Wasaga this weekend.

Had a Buffalo Burger ( yep the real thing ) and a good chat with a another biker and his daughter out for a ride.

Had a good ride - 7 hours with a couple of decently long breaks and some twisties and dirt roads in the mix plus trying out new camera.

Neck is a bit sore but also road 5 hours last night.

Good lazy day trip from Toronto. Hockley Road and Beaver Valley are both in the area and the R**** twisty kept secret for squirrels. ;)
