conundrum

Well-known member
To further one of my original threads/polls, I was just wondering how many people have either a Sena comms unit (SMH10 or SMH5) vs a Cardo unit (Scala G4, Teamset, etc)

I'm still debating which to get, and since I plan on doing some group riding this summer, I just wanted to get a feel for which brand more people are using here on GTAM.

Additionally, when answering the poll, please post in this thread the actual model you use, and any pros/cons you have with your unit.

Thanks in advance

Have used both, Sena all the way. Speaker quality, drop out performance, simplicity of jog dial all give it the edge. Several reviews comparing the two. The Sena is less expensive as well, got mine for $230 shipped from a Vancouver distributor. Sena also has a Mac native version of its update software if that matters to you.

Agreed. You really don't have to debate any longer, go with the Sena (SMH10). You will not be dissapointed.

Just ordered a Sena SMH10 dual pack. I don't really care about connecting to anybody but the GF and the Sena seemed like the better unit for usability.

Shoulda bought the SMH5 by all accounts its much better value.

Would you share with us where did you order it and for how much? Father's Day is fast approaching, would be nice to give some hit to the family. I'm interested in the dual pack since I ride with my son quite often.

Thank you for your help in advance!

I ordered the SMH5 dualpack for $186.75 from revzilla.com and picked it up in the USA.

I got mine when they first came out from an outfit called RocketMoto (there was a thread on ADVRIder) and we got a Duel sets for $US299 !! Delivery by USPS and no taxes when it arrived (Did we get lucky?)

Just make sure you buy from a authorized reseller so you can send back if there are any issues etc. I was happy because SENS released the new (current) version with the SMH10 with USB upgrade-ability and I was able to upgrade for $50.

Hunt around, maybe post on ADVRIder.

wow! Thats a great price!!

The SMH5 is lacking a couple of features I wanted, most importantly the external audio connection for my mp3 player. The longer battery life is also a plus.

I ordered from Revzilla, $299 for the dual pack.

I'm after VOX, so the 5 is pretty much ruled out there. Price also isn't a real concern (although I don't want to be ripped off), so no issues getting the 10 over the 5.

I still have to download the SMH10 manual and take a look, but does anyone know how the VOX actually works on it? I've read you have to hold the button/jogdial for 12 seconds which sounds odd, since VOX is supposed to remove the need to actually push anything. Ideally I want a solution where I can just say things and it does things, or announces what it is about to do.

How water proof is the Sena? This past week my group was caught in a storm at a rest stop. I left my helmet resting on my mirror with the visor open for this rain storm while we all huddled under a shelter. My helmet was soaked to the point i was pouring it out of the helmet...the Sena worked no problem and for the next 3000km. Great product.

no, once vox mode is on, you just say something loud to start it off. Holding for 12s ? sounds more like a setup thing.

The new voice interaction is great. I know what is connected.. "PPhone connected, media connnected, 'device' connected" when i power up the SMH10.

yep, its awesomely waterproof. Used it for 2 years in torential downpours. Just make sure the rubber caps are on tight.

I ordered mine from cyclebots. Here's the direct link for a dualpack of the SMH10 for 299. You can also get $10 off by using coupon code "stowners". They ship using USPS so shipping to a canadian address isnt' an issue (no hidden charges; the most you'll pay at the door is $7 + Taxes).

A few more quick questions:

Is there an option to buy one with a corded mike (vs boom), or is that only available as an option. I know with the scala they seem to sell them both ways.

Also, for anyone who has a Sena an a Shoei RF-1100, any issues installing it/fitting the clamp and boom on that helmet?

Sena SMH10! Get on ADVrider and PM Rocketmoto for a price. That's where I got mine and so far I haven't seen anyone that sells for anywhere close to what Adam does. Had them ship it to a US address just across the border, if you don't have one, you can easily find one by searching online or try kinek.com. I picked it up on the way back from a few days in the states so no tax. Done! Buy a few things this way and never a problem.

Back to the Sena, so far so good. Connecting to the iPhone is a breeze and it reconnects within a second or 2 after turning on. I have found the volume somewhat lacking but I figured out to turn off the EQ and sound check on the iPhone - made a big difference. Have also compared that to connecting an iPod with the cable and volume was almost the same. I wear earplugs so keep that in mind, if you don't then this won't be an issue at all.

Haven't had it long enough to try out with my wife so I can't speak to the intercom side of it, but phone and music are perfect. Definitely check out the thread going on ADVrider, lots of good info.
