I set out from Pickering at 7:00AM yesterday morning for an all day ride to Algonquin Park and back. The route was roughly Pickering, Port Perry, Bridgenorth, Buckhorn, 507, then #3 to Tory Hill, Wilberforce, Elephant Lake and Peterson Roads, Hwy. 127 to Whitney, through the park, then south towards home. Hwy. 35 south from Dorset, then I stopped for an hour at about 4:30 at a friend's cottage in Fenelon Falls. On to Port Perry and Pickering. 673 KM total.

It was lovely ride, my Thruxton was equal to the task in every way; very impressed with it. Glorious weather, of course. Traffic was light the entire day, and a lot fewer motorcycles than I expected. Care should be used on Elephant Lake and Peterson Roads. There was plenty of silt or very fine gravel on the road which made for a couple of slidely moments.

Algonquin Park is spectacular, completely natural and unspoiled. The next time I go, I will spent more time.

I would have taken more photos, but I was having too much fun riding! :D

All set to go:

A "selfie", as my daughter might say:

I was about to stop for lunch at a nondescript diner in Whitney, then I spied the Mad Musher a little further up the road. I saw all the bikes out front and figured they were onto something good.

Beautiful Canoe Lake in the park. Plenty of activity going on, a number of folks preparing for canoe trips.

I saw a moose in the park who was attracting a lot of attention. I chose to carry on. I also saw a wild turkey standing at the side of the road. Just after leaving Dorset, another moose. This time I stopped for a not so good photo:

Excellent! Looks like it was fine day.

In looking at the ergos of the Thruxton, it looks best suited to always being on the move and at a fair clip at that. The bars look low enough that you count on upper body air to unload your wrists a bit. Probably the tank bag interferes with that task a little? So 120+ is a must?
I really appreciate the retro effort Triumph has pulled off with this modern day built bike. Great job..such a looker.

No, no problem on the Thruxton for me. No interference from the tank bag, I can lean on it if I choose, but I usually ride a bit more upright. Keep in mind my '11 Thrux has a tubular bar on risers, as opposed to earlier models with clip ons. I kept the pace around 100-120, ever mindful of police on a long weekend.

Sounds like a really nice ride! I have been wanting to go up there for a while now..

Would you mind sharing a more detailed route? (PM or post) I wouldn't mind going solo up there sometime.. heard some scary chit about moose though..

Here ya go: http://binged.it/JASqWS

Traveled in a counter clockwise direction. The map is a bit screwed up at the end, but it should follow the identical route back from Port Perry to Pickering. I hope you find it useful.

thanks for all the info and pics! looks like you had a lot of fun.

if you're ever near Minden again, check out Deep Bay Road (north of 45, off of 35)

Thanks for sharing, sounds like you had a nice ride.

Is your helmet a Bell? or AGV perhaps? ... just wondering

I have a cottage on Raven Lake at Dorset. The last time I rode the park I saw a Moose with calf. I stopped, but then realized I had just ****** off a 1500 pound babe protecting her young...got back on the bike and split! Great ride though - nice pics.

Looks good on the map. Thanks for the tip!

Not Bell nor AGV, but it is the best kept secret in lids: it's an HJC RPS-10.

Hey thanks a lot man!! I am going to do this ASAP...

Welcome. Have a great ride. Be sure to share some photos.

Hey next time you go there give me a holler I would have gone with you so badly, coincidently I was at Dorset and Lake of Bays just a week before but in my vehicle.

Why do you post about this trip AFTER you had taken it? That's cruel.

Grrr. Why is it the best kept secret? We need to know now. "Thruxton" remains the best name for a motorbike. In case you're wondering, Thruxton Circuit (the Hampshire racetrack after which the bike is named) was originally a WW2 RAF airfield.

A hopped up Thruxton with RAF colours would be pretty cool.

I refer to it as that because I think I'm the only guy who bought one! Never seen another rider with one. Every bit as good as Shoei or Arai, in my opinion, for quite a bit less. I'd buy another without hesitation.

That now makes two of us who have this opinion. Not as quiet as HJC told me it would be but prefer it over my previous Arai Corsair in all departments! (Really I just said that about a $280 helmet vs an $800 one?)

Oh and looks like a good ride may have to try it some day!
