Modular helmets, safe? Only for nerds?

I have modular and if you ever do long trips they rock. No need to take it off every stop or when you go in gas station.
As for safety I could not care less about snell test. It is disputed how much it represents anything realistic. It is not cooler unless you flip it up in a traffic jam. I do it on occasion and it is great. When it starts moving flip goes down.
Some people think modular helmets look funny?? I'll add it do my could not care less about list.

Safety schmafety. Who are you hanging with, a bunch of boyscouts? A good modular is plenty safe

I think the Shark Evoline is probably the safest modular available. It isn't light, and it isn't cheap. and it isn't quiet. But it's locking system is all steel, and the chinbar is made from the same composites as the rest of the shell. Also, as far as I know, it is the only modular helmet to pass tests and be legal to wear, riding, while in the open, flipped up position. I am still consideringpicking one up...but the Battlestar Gallactica styling leaves me cold.

Fantastic helmet, I have one. Very well balanced wherever the chin bar position is. Very solid locking, extremely comfortable and not really that noisy when in full face mode. It is a bit heavier than a normal full face though.

old school thinking... if you've got a 10$ head you'll wear a 10$ helmut, do what you want, if it makes you happy.

I have to admit, I bought the modular strictly for vanity reasons. I have a huge melon and it is way easier to get on. Perhaps that's partly why I am feeling guilty. I'm going to tell everyone it is because I couldn't take my coffee intravenously however  Thanks for the input everyone :)

Sometimes I think about getting a modular so I can have a cig when I'm stuck in disgusting traffic

Best looking modular helmet, evAr.

If it has a DOT sticker on it, wear it with confidence - SNELL be damned (wish I could find that article posted here some time ago about the "benefits" of SNELL vs. DOT i.e. quasi-myths - Red, DOT is cool, SNELL if for wannabe racers, lol).

Kidding to the SNELL crowd, don't get all uppity.

That article was comparing DOT full-face helmets to Snell full-face helmets. Snell, ECE, and SHARP tests all test for chin impact. DOT doesn't.

Guess I am a nerd. Why are you so worried I will mess up my pretty face anyways Freestyle?? Somebody has a little crush on me! Hahahahaa!!!

I would just feel bad for your boyfriend. If you had no face what would he aim for?

Look at you being an outstanding citizen all of a sudden! Seems like you're spending way too much time thinking about my boyfriends wang though :jerk:

To Rob's point - Red, trade in your current modular and get thee a Schuberth as they are at least ECE (ECE-R 22.05) approved (that should make Freestyle sleep better at night thinking about your boyfriend, his wang, and your chin...wait...wut?...).

Bringing this thread back to life because I'm looking at getting a modular. Any suggestions for which to get?
There aren't a whole lot of modular helmets that will pass the Snell chin bar test. My Schuberth, a quality, well engineered modular, certainly doesn't.
I don't know about Snell but according to SHARP (UK) the C3 only gets a 3/5 star rating and the chinbar only stayed closed 97% of the time.

Evoline gets a 4/5 star SHARP rating but the chinbar only stayed closed in 70% of their tests. Evoline3 gets 5/5 but seems to have a lower rating for forehead impact and the chinbar only stayed closed for 57% of their tests so now I don't know how the heck this rating works. (Helmet that had lower test results gets a higher rating?)

I'm considering the Nolan N104 which also gets a 4/5 but the chinbar stayed closed 100% of the time. I'm just curious how it compares as far as noise, comfort, ventilation, etc against the competition.

That Roof helmet looks cool but it looks like the visor doesn't open at all and it costs somewhere around $500 (or more) and can only be imported from Europe. The N104 is more like $300-400 which is more in my price range.

Apparently there are only 2 modular helmets that meet SNELL. The LS2 FF394 and the Zeus ZS-3000. Neither have been rated by SHARP.
