Winter storage with no garage

Hi guys,

Just wondering what people without a garage are using for winter storage. I'm close to buying a house and the way things are looking the one I will end up with will not have a garage. It will have a back yard though so I was thinking maybe something like this might suffice: http://www.cycleshell.com. Or should I maybe get something like a tool shed and use that?

Thanks,
danarchy

House = big comfy garage. Grab some 2x4s and ride it on inside. Makes for terrific dinner conversation.

Unless you're married, then yeah something like the CycleShell will do but a full structured enclosure (tool shed) would probably be a worth while investment.

I'd build or buy a decent shed for sure.

Or better yet just don't buy a house without a garage!!

If you want something that is less of an eye sore and just looks like a regular shed blending in, rubbermaid make a large shed with double doors that you can put together easily in a morning, fits a motorcycle no problem. It also has a floor too so you can pretty much place it anywhere in your garden.

I believe this is the one I used to have in my old house and the bike fit in at an angle. I believe its around 4' wide by 6' deep and 6' high.

In Toronto you can build a shed up to around 100 square feet without a permit. That's half the size of a single car garage.
Use your imagination to max out what you want. High roof for overhead storage, big doors, fold down work benches, hydro, windows or not. Mini-man cave.

A lot of store bought ones have low ceilings.

Building your own isn't cheap though. I spent $3G 20 years ago. Concrete slab, vinyl siding etc.

Check the current bylaws for setbacks etc. A neighbour built one and had to move it a foot because it was too close to the fence. (Other neighbour is a prick)

I agree that a poured concrete pad and a proper shed built on top is the way to go, but if space or budget don't allow for this then I'd personally go cycleshell. I've never owned a pre-fab shed in a box, but they just don't look sturdy. Like those metal ones that everyone had in the '80's and '90's on patio stones. After a year or 2 they leaked and the doors would never slide closed properly. Maybe they're better now.......I dunno.

LOL, I wish. For some reason houses with a garage are considerably more expensive than the ones without one. It boggles my mind, a garage is the simplest room in the house - there is no plumbing, no hardwood floors, no heat or anything else in there. It's just a room with a cement floor, ceiling and four walls. There is no reason for such a price difference but there it is.

Thanks, that looks good.

It seems that a decent shed is the way to go. I'll probably go with that option. Thanks all.

slightly off topic but can you put one of these storage sheds in a parking spot in a condo?

Well actually there is a reason, convenience of having one vs not having one, and people are obviously willing to pay extra for that convenience. That was one of my major deciding factors when purchasing a home. Just save up for a few more months and get a home with a garage.

I get the whole thing about supply and demand but if that's all there is to it then every real estate development company would start building houses with a garage to increase profits. Granted, it would eventually dilute the value of a garage but businesses are usually short-sighted like that anyway.

Check out these guys as well:

They make a sturdy product and will deliver anywhere in GTA. Have one of their sheds (8 x 12) and use it for garden and pool stuff but could easily fit a couple of bikes. No permit needed for this size but anything bigger would require one.

That looks nice. A bit on the pricey side but definitely worth looking into.

Do you have it on top of something? Something about leaving the bike on the ground that can soak up water kind of worries me.

You have to anchor the structure into the ground with 8" corkscrews in each corner. I have the bikes sit on top of a sheet of 1/2 plywood. The grass is dead but the bikes are dry & happy.

If you don't have a garage you're going to need a place for all your junk (lawn mower, bicycles, etc....) anyway, so get a prefab shed or build one yourself. At the cottage I have a 10 x 8 metal shed that's 20+ years old and its still watertight. It sits on a small platform of 2 x 6's with plywood on top. Don't waste your money on a fabric storage shed and make certain you don't buy a metal or vinyl one that is too small, 8 x 10 is the minumum I'd go for.

A proper shed would definitely be ideal. However I've used a shelter logic 8x6 shed similar to above going on six years now. Works just fine, just not the prettiest.

I agree. It's not the best looking thing but the price was right. I'm building a 10x8 wooden shed to house the bike & the rest of the yard/snow toys this summer.
