CAA (Plus) Membership for Motorcycles?

I've been wondering, what will happen if I (hypothetically) need CAA towing when I'm let's say very close to home, like let's say 200 meters. Would they agree to tow it to a repairs shop which is e.g. 50 km away, or they'll say they have to tow it to home (200 meters away)?

You can request a tow to anywhere. If your car broke down 200m from home, it's understandable if you don't want to push it to your driveway. I've never heard of a minimum towing distance.

No, I guess what I'm saying is if they'll say they can't tow it 50km to the repair shop since they can just tow it to my home. Is CAA all about towing to home, or you can choose the destination, e.g. the repairs shop?

They ask you where you want it towed, you don't have to take it home.

Then, what stops people from fraudulent use of the service? So, let's say John Doe has a bike that is not rideable and needs extensive repairs, but he's too cheap to get a trailer or call the towing company to take the bike to the shop. Instead, he just walks the bike to the next block and calls CAA? Or even worse---makes a CAA towing request at his house's address.

The reason I though of this is because a few years ago I had an old Altima, and it died 4 houses down from my home on the same street I live. I didn't have CAA at the time, and I called a towing company, paid and got the vehicle transported to Sears repairs shop, which is about 10 km away. I wonder how this would have worked out with CAA..

Why is towing your unrideable bike to the shop fraudulent use? I've done that on several occasions and I told CAA exactly what I was doing. One year I my bike got snowed in and I couldn't ride it to the shop for storage so I got CAA to tow it from my home address to the shop. No questions asked.

Remember you are the customer, the service is not free so you get it towed to wherever you want within the limits of the contract

I'm not saying it should be considered fraud, I was just asking. I can only be happy with your responses :) Well, also hope I won't need to use the service for that (or at all for all that matters), but it makes me feel much more comfortable having CAA now :)

You break down, they tow it to your place or shop. Some people take their car/bike to the shop to get fixed others fix things from home. When I was getting trained at Moto Limo people would take their bike home cause their shop wasn't open and they didn't wamt to leave the bike unattended there, then they would request an other tow for the day that the shop reopened. Not sure if that was with the plus plan or the higher up plan though.

This is against the contract one tow per problem. It is very specific about this if you tow you car or bike home and can't get it started they are not supposed to tow it again. They are not allwed to tow it from shop to shop either. What happens in practise may be different but you can easily be denied service and they can cancel your membership.

I blew my engine in my car a couple years ago about 500m from my house they picked it up in Kitchener and dropped it off in Barrie at my buddies engine shop to get an new engine, No charge to me.

Taximan....... Thank you, thank you, thank you.

My 3yr factory roadside assistance expired for my bike this past January. The manufacturer isn't interested in me paying them to extend my membership.

I have Basic CAA, but when I went to upgrade to Plus so I could use it for the bike. They told me that I already used all 4 of my "service calls" for this year! (we have several vehicles) So basically, my CAA is useless until renewal next October! On top of that, the Plus is over $100!

Then I called AMA, and they are only $49 for unlimited! Do US and Canada and are UNLIMITED service calls, and do bikes, along with all our vehicles for no extra charge.

Lady on the phone was great and answered all my questions.

Screw CAA.

p.s. For anybody that is wondering whether these types of service is worth it? Hell yes! Came in handy many times for myself, friends, and family. Even on my bike, when I had a flat tire. They picked it up and brought to my house, no questions asked.

Join the American Motorcycle Association http://www.americanmotorcyclist.com/ and if you make your membership auto renew every year you get roadside assistance for ALL of your vehicles motorcycles and cars free with your membership all for about $40. Way better than CAA! I have used it twice in Canada for my car for tows in the past year with no issues at all.

I have CAA coverage with the RV package applied. We broke down up north while towing our boat, and was provided the option to upgrade on the spot so that the tow would also cover the insured cost of the Jeep and the boat on the trailer. They put the Jeep on a flatbed, and towed the boat on the hitch. I pull my bikes around in a 5x10 open trailer, and I would expect that CAA will cover the same configuration under the specialized RV profile. Something to consider if you move bikes back and forth on trailers. You may not even need the RV package to cover a bike and trailer, but something to think about if you do. Maybe the basic coverage will do? I have it anyways for the boat.

Towing Services

Towing services are covered up to 35 miles to the nearest qualified service facility (or to any other location requested by the member of equal distance at no expense to the member). If over 35 miles, the member is only responsible for the overages incurred after the 35-miles coverage.

So they will tow up to 56 kms.
This would be an issue if for example one was riding through Algonquin park and had a breakdown. The nearest garage very well may be further than that.
If on a trip through northern Ontario (and some other locations) there are lengths of the highway where there are no service repair facilities within the 56kms.

Your point is valid, and I inquired about this. Anything beyond 56km you pay the operator on the spot.

If I'm in the middle of nowhere and I need the extra kms, I'd gladly pay the extra to get me out of a jam.

But in reality, I've never needed a more than 56km tow.

I had no idea about the caa limitations and glad the rep told me this when I went to upgrade.

I'm done with them when my membership expires.
