GSXR 1100 w/ 80,000km. to buy or not to buy?

Hey guys, i found a 1994 gsxr1100, looks clean and is safetied. has 80,000km's though.

nike is priced at $2500

what do you guys think about it? current owner is 2nd owner, previouse owner took good care of it as he says. 1st owner was an older man.

how much would a motor rebuild cost if i needed one? how readily available are parts for 1100's?

Not worth it. You'll end up putting at least $1500 in parts etc. Better to put the money on getting something newer. That's my 2 cents.

You're obviously new at this. That bike is big and heavy. Buy something else.
 
There are better bikes but the 94 was a pretty good bike. Check it out and beware of anything but a silky smooth and glitch free transmission, 2nd gear is known to go if abused. The bike is a bit big and heavy but it's no big deal on the road, the suspension will be completely worn out (front rebuild with new springs and a totally new rear shock, grease every single pivot point, check steering head play and replace bearings if it binds at all, all cables will need replacing if they haven't been already or are steel braid in which they need fresh fluid.

I had the 92 and while I had fun, I wouldn't buy another. My 92 FZR1000 was superior in EVERY way if you want another option for around the same money.

Not great deal at all, especially if you cannot wrench yourself. Engine is probably still good but there are many others things that need to be done at that mileage, wheels bearings, rear shock was garbage
even when new (newer gsxr 60-80$ used), chain and sprockets, rotors may need to be replaced, electrical connectors cleaned and "greased", and some others small things that you can do yourself.
But if you have to pay someone to do everything, then bike purchase price is irrelevant. If someone was screwing around with carburetors and bike runs poorly hot or cold, sorting that out could
cost you a fortune in hourly labor. Small electrical problem could ruin couple of weeks/weekends rides, plus you have to pay someone hours for "diagnostics" what could be loose connection or bad ignition coil...........
And 1100 cc may not be insurance friendly also...

Given its age, parts will be hard to come by. Keep in mind a 20 year old bike with near 100k mileage will be worth what someone want to pay for it ... (not much).


Unless its your hearts desire to have that bike, i'd walk away... quickly.
 
judging by your name, that bike is too big and way too fast for you. buy a 250cc you'll live longer.
 
The Oil Coolers in those bikes went pretty quick from what I remember. Still an amazing bike though, I wouldn't mind buying it, but not for that price. I'd take it for $1000. Again, a lot of maintenance will be needed, and parts are very scarce. Most people part those bikes out to track riders as it is.

I'm just about to pick up a '90 gsxr 750 this wknd. I received positive comments when I posted a thread about it. But now I'm seeing the complete reverse. I know its a diff bike but shud I be just as worried?

Ps: my insurance quote was pretty damn good to pass up. Plus the seller works as a mechanic in a suzuki shop. I get some assurance from that.

90 750 isn't a bad bike once you swap in a ZX-10 or gsxr 1000 Shock and get the front set up Properly
Those carbs can be a pain but not impossible to dial in

as for the OP

80,000Plus on a 94 1100 for $2500???? Not worth it
$1000 or less Tops

They look the same, kinda. They are NOT the same bike powertrain wise. They do both have 4 cylinders... lol.

That's hilarious. You figured out the guy's size and weight by his name? Dan? (I realize you were referring to the "Muay Thai" part but I'm giving you an out by ignoring that part which, FYI, is a martial art and not necessarily an indication of race).

I was going to respond in a similar fashion but I believe he is just poking fun. I mean what guy with a screen name like Stewart would have the cajones to make fun of anyone else's screen name for real? Or much less recommend a 250?

Its cheaper to get a used motor than to rebuild one.....obvious disclamer here....

$2500 vs $1000 bikes.

Currently working on a bike that a buddy bought for cheap - now its costing them $500 + in parts / tuning / cleaning / replacements parts to get it going and be safe.

IF they just paaid a bit more - they could have gotten a better bike that woulnd't require another $500 put into it.

You pay for what you get - so make sure you are buying something that is well kept. You dont want to blow $1000 or $2500 and have a huge headach after...
