Riding Mexico

I just came back from Costa Rica... let me tell you.. skip mexico and head down the pan american high way... central america is the most fun on 2 wheels I have ever had... If you head through the mountains, or even on any of the highways there are so many amazing roads, and they are in NO WAY like in Mexico. I drove through the entire country in a huge loop, and the drivers are friendly, so are all the locals... breathtaking...

Are there any Tico's on this site?

I agree, however, how many links are there of TO cops being found brutally murdered and beheaded in the streets of popular tourist destinations? These gang members are ruthless regardless if you're in law enforcement or just an innocent tourist. I mean we have crime here in Canada but these guys take it to a whole new level!
I have to agree with that.

As somebody who is curious to learn about experiences riding in Mexico and the region in general (as riding through all countries interest me), I'd like to thank the small handful of people in this thread that have responded as such. As for the other 90% of conversation however, are extremely unhelpful, totally subjective, hear-say and close-minded. Facts, suggestions, stories and experiences, however they might be is useful information to share. Scaring people with news stories, or making generalizations about an entire country or culture is irresponsible, and a low hanging fruit. I'm an experienced traveller and i always travel independently. A smile and a good attitude has opened up doors into many amazing cultural experiences and sights. I've had my fair share of situations with the shady, however, each and every one of them could have been avoided had i either not been distracted, or had paid more attention to what locals where saying and acting.

So, for those out there who rather be smart then scared...

Where are the good roads? What roads are suggested and what areas should be avoided? Border crossing? Alternate route? Resources? Rental suggestions? Etc. Etc.

Let's keep GTA motorcycle a useful resource and not a soapbox for ignorance.

How was the general condition of the roads? What bike were you riding and where'd you get it?

Okay let me make this one post as long as I can just to throw out all the info I can remember without digging through all my papers...

Costa Rica is a very safe place to visit. All the locals encourage tourism because they all depend on you spending your $$ in the country. Another thing to note is there are a lot of Americans who own enormous ranches (they also own a lot of tour companies) so its easy to find friends down there. I never ONCE felt in danger or unsafe, and I was out and about for 10 days in the middle of no where at times.

I changed bikes depending on what part of the country I was in, I first got to Arenal (by the volcano) and in that area it was dirt bikes, and ATV's because there is so much gravel in the area, you can go solo, or with a guided group which I did in the first city. After leaving that city and heading towards MonteVerde, by luck our driver was a local motocross champ, so he took a detour and showed us the track that is used all year for the competitions, I thought I was very lucky because he was able to direct me to a many bike rental companies.

I would put more but I have to sift through all the brochures I brought back with me... some tour companies will wink out of existence, only to come back later with a different owner, not sure why, don't really care. They do make you sign a waiver no big deal.. I had to sign them for all the "crazy" activities I did..

As for the road conditions, they are excellent. Where there are real roads, they are in perfect shape and feel like they were just paved. The Pan-American highway I noticed was very busy with riders lots of SS bikes, and also a handful of touring bikes with extra tires (they may have gone up the mountains which have no paving and when I say up the mountain, I mean WAY up with a one lane road with no barriers).

I would say 90% of the roads I saw (and i did a huge loop of the country over a 10 day span) Nothing I rode was worse than for example Steeles Ave around Younge st. And that's bad, but once you pass through the major cities (not even as large as Richmond Hill) these cities are tiny... like a very small town... the roads are smooth, and very curvy. So the roads get a huge thumbs up from me, as for traffic, if you are on a good bike it wouldn't even be a problem because its so sparse (and I was down there during their peak holiday times). The drivers help each other know when traffic ahead is clear so you can pass trucks and slower cars.

Another thing to note is cops.. and speeding. They are much nicer down there when it comes to speeding. I asked a local how much does a speeding ticket cost and how often does it happen. The motocross driver told me $200 is the max for 50 over.. I just started laughing.. so nothing scary there. Do it if you feel like it, but don't go overboard, because often you cannot see beyond the next right..

Bikes available : Any range of Honda and Yamaha 50- 400 cc dirt bikes, KTM touring bikes, Yzf, older gsxr's 2001-2005, it just depends on what you book ahead of time, and where in the country you are heading.

I will FOR SURE be going back there, except this time I want to do what the Motocross guy (I can remember his name for the life of me) told me to do, which is take the pan american highway and head south to panama, or north to Nicaragua and enjoy all the roads in those countries. apparently a lot of americans do the touring thing through central and south america. Just don't go deep into the forests in Nic and the rebels wont bother you. :D

If anyone is looking to go, I can dig into my papers for the real details and PM you..

That sound like an excellent trip. Would love more info when you have the time. Just more general as id be just renting a bike and heading off with a general route around a week or 10 days. I prefer guideless as i like getting lost. How much were the bikes? Are finding places to stay a day at a time an issue? How much are the littler hotels?

Sounds like Costa Rica offers a great blend between offroad excitement and flying through the countryside zen roads.

Thanks!

A very interesting read for anybody wanting to travel in Mexico.

I was going through that one and a few other countries. It only reinforces how fortunate we are to live in Canada. No doubt it's not perfect, but it's definitely high on the list.

Hey thanks for all the positive response , but the negative one scared my buddies out of the ride! Been down here 3 time with out a problem and love it! Don't let darth vader change your mind incoming here! It's awsome! The people are great! Travelled around on the local tranit with no problems! Even drunk! If your scared of the Mayan you shouldn't even ride bike! You have more chances wiping out in your drive way as you do getting killed here fir no reason! Sure you here about Canadian having problems down here but that's because half of Canada is here ! I'm sure if you try too find trouble you can but be half sensible and no problem! there's many gated resorts here if you are scared ! Anyway I'm heading back too the bar! If I don't rely back by thursday I take this all back because I am dead! LoL cheers!

Mexico on the news tonite 47,000 murders in the last 5 years with thousands missing, swell place for sure

Mexico is not a place I'd choose to ride. But, the racist and insulting drivel in this thread is irritating and not helpful to the topic.

Mexico has troubles. So do most places in the world.

To the OP, you may find more insightful information from people that actually routinely ride in Mexico on another site. ADVrider has a lengthy post discussing the challenges, dangerous areas and precautions to consider.

Sorry to GTAM for referencing another forum but when this thread allows the type of crap that's been posted here I dunno what else to say.

I agree I'm sure there is lots of bad places there but had no problems with the Mexicans ! All were friendly and helpful! Funny thing is the only problems I had were with Canadians ! The French ones! Could not believe how many rude ones there were! They would boo other Canadians at the nightly shows ! Would say no I'm from Quebec when asked if they were from Canada! Made my blood boil. Next year I'm going too make a shirt that says %100 non french Canadian! Hope all Quebecers aren't that rude or will never vist that place! And no I'm not racist!

What are the rules regarding ATVs and dirt bikes - can you ride them on the road and in town? Did you see anywhere that rented ATVs or dirtbikes for the day WITHOUT a guided tour (ie just let you rent one to use like a scooter to get around town). Any other tips or general advice on cool things to do (other than the obvious ruins/cenotes/diving/etc).
