Do any of you GTAM'ers have stats on the amount of police that monitor Ontario highway patrol.. I know Quebec high way patrol is scarce (10,0000/1 probably lol) which allows many riders/drivers to get away with those high speeds at any time of day. Is Ontario highway patrol as scarce as Quebecs? And if Ontario highway patrol is scarce, does Ontario rely solely on the airplane, cameras and abiding citizens to catch riders/drivers speeding for 172, other than highway patrol sitting on the shoulder waiting for the unsuspecting rider/driver to zoom past so he/she can get 172'd.

What's the purpose of asking this question?
If it's so you can weigh the probabilities of going more than 50 over on a 400 series highway ... there are just enough cops around to make this not a good idea. And the airplane is not very easy to spot (but it's only airborne daytime in clear weather). And all the main highways around Greater Toronto have cameras to the MTO. Now, I know what you're thinking; the MTO is not the police. True. But they have the phone number to the cops if they see something blatantly out of the ordinary going on. And, everyone has a cell phone these days, which can be used to report idiots.
As for secondary roads and back roads ... It varies.

In addition to the aircraft that is owned, by OPP, they rent additional planes on high traffic (read 'holiday') weekends.
That is messed up on so many levels. I'm kind of sad I have to leave montreal for toronto in January because now that I think about it; Quebec has some very stupid laws -- but now that I'm realizing Ontario's vehicle laws are 10-fold to Quebecs, it really makes me look at Montreal and how different it's going to be.

I've driven both Quebec and Ontario "major" highways and really, it's about the same. Police patrol the most common stretches known for excessive speed. Locals know the favorite fishing pools.
Closer to my city, the OPP do seem to take enjoyment in pulling over higher end machinery. Mercs, Beemers and Caddies. SS bikes in riding weather. Cruisers and touring seem to fair much better. But, this is just casual observation.
I know roads I can rip up for the most part close to home. And I know some friends in some nice places that can show me some other roads to travel at a fun clip without losing my licence.
I wouldn't use the number of cops for a given province as a barometer. If fact, another friend has his licence suspended in Nova Scotia from two speeding tickets. Think it was for 30 days if memory serves. Both tickets in his cage and in the same summer. Their highways have 110 limits but, the cops like to fish in sections that drop down to 100 or 90.
Just be aware of the laws, ride responsibly and have fun. No matter where you ride.

I would have no disagree that Quebec highway patrol is consistent with Ontario. It just doesn't add up -- I've done countless runs on the major highways going to and out of montreal to various destinations.. If I see a car pulled over on the highway, I just think it Sucks for that guy, because the variance factor in running into a cop who is actually going to pull you over for whatever reason is very low from my observations.
There is a major city highway in Montreal that is the 720 - this highway is unofficially known to many as the "720 speedway". The speed-limit is 70Km, which many drivers uphold to, but is not uncommon to see the left lane vehicles; cars and bikes hitting speeds in excess of 150Km+. Out of the 100's++ riding along the "720 speedway" , I have seen maybe 2-3 cars pulled over by the highway patrol.
Highway 40, Highway 20 (major highway that run connect from Ontario's borders to Montreal, Quebec City etc), are also very scarce for highway patrol; very common for speeds of 150+ in all lanes being the norm. To be caught by the police for those speeds, is just considered unlucky.

By those numbers, 1 cop for every 513 residents in Quebec, vs 1 for every 500 in Ontario. That's close enough to being the same.
By area, more of Quebec is remote and unpopulated than is Ontario. Quebec's population density is 5.87 residents per square km concentrated mainly along a comparatively narrow band along the St Lawrence and Ottawa Rivers. Ontario's population is spread out over a much wider area, and has an average demisty of 14.39 residents per square km.

So, Quebec has 42% more cops than Ontario, in the provincial police force.
On a city level,
Toronto has 5598 sworn officers, serving 2,480,000. (443 people per cop)
Montreal has 4600 sworn officers serving 1,620,693. (352 people per cop)
So, Montreal has 26% more cops than here.
Of course, real numbers are more cops/population, since there is overlap (OPP still exists in GTA where you have TPS, YRP, DRPS, PRP, etc), and the OPP density is higher in southern Ontario versus up north. That said, as far as traffic enforcement goes, it is still pretty accurate, as OPP tends to only enforce traffic on the highways, while the regional forces tend to only do in-town routes, making their enforcement areas, effectively, separate.

+1 to this. However sometimes my buddy invites me to the cottage on the long weekend, and when that happens I take the back country roads up. His cottage is in the Gray/Bruce area, so luckily there's multiple ways up
