I have a strong feeling more of this kind of petty theft will be on the rise as lower capacity scooters and bikes come into favour. Why? Well, the users of such vehicles generally happen to be two types of people; young noob riders who may often be immature, frustrated with the high cost of riding and may have an opportunistic delinquent streak, while the other type is a mature but low income adult who may steal such items out of financial "desperation" to cut costs of their commute to work.

Normally in the past no one would think of stealing someone's hygenically questionable head or hand gear, and this act is a clear sign of desperation. We used to be able to leave our helmets locked to our bikes in relative safety, but I fear this will decrease rapidly in the coming years.

Keep your gear with you is my suggestion.

Sorry I couldn't help with nabbing this dirty bastard.

Thanks for your thoughts.
He is definately older....and rides around on an E bike....in grey sweats.

I will certainly never attach my helmets to the bike anymore.

wasn't your helmet locked to your bike? if so- how was he able to steal it without cutting the strap..?

When you leave something worth a few hundred dollars out in the open especially in a large city, you're surprised when it gets stolen?

I'm sorry this happened, but you kinda ask for it when you leave stuff strapped to your bike.

wow... That's a whole lot of interpretation right there.

I know this sucks, but whether your helmet was locked onto your bike or not, you were kinda asking for it. I would only leave my helmet and tankbag on the big if I am in eyeshot.
Daryll

That part of town is sooo sketchy to begin with.
Will keep an eye out for you.

Did the camera actually catch that same guy during the theft so that you are sure it's him?

I'm with no fear on this one ... i almost always religiously take my gear with me... if am not ? I put it into my luggage which is hard case and locked ...

I'm not sure how you've made this determination but I've been riding for 30+ years and have seen stuff stolen from bikes more than once. This isn't a new phenomenon.

A needle and thread restores cut straps easily.

Wise words.

I was thinking the same. With the images above, there is nothing that says he took the helmet.
