Burning Wood

Looking for some people with some knowledge in the heating department, i have a gas fire place in my house now and was wandering if i get a wood burning insert if i also need to get a chimney that goes above my roof, or can i just use the chimney that was installed with the gas furnace.

Thanks

You are going to need a proper chimney that goes up to and above your roof. You can do that with stainless steel double-walled and insulated flue pipe which you can punch horizontally through your outside wall, and then turn up to reach your roof plus the required added height above the roof line depending on where your chimney reaches the roof. Look at the bottom of page 2 here for some info on that. http://www.friendlyfires.ca/html/CMFiles/101F_WoodFAQs.pdf

Also, to be safe you should notify your insurance company of your intention to install a wood-burning appliance before you actually start to do it. They may have their own requirements that you need to meet, and that wood-burning appliance may or may not have an effect on your home's fire insurance rates.

You will need to get a building permit for the installation of the insert and the chimney. If you install the insert and the chimeny yourself, you will be able to submit the final inspection report (because the buidling inspector who inspects your job will be WETT certified) which the insurance company requires as proof that it was installed properly. If you decide to go an buy a used insert, make sure it has the manufactures plate on it that gives all the clearances on it, the building department will need this for the issuance of the pemit.

Also, the cheapest place to buy the chimney is Home Depot, however not all Home Depots carry that so you will have to check around.

I don't believe you can have the chimney run dual.

I enjoy my wood stove but if i had the option for nat gas i'd probably go with that.

After I learned about fracking, I'll take wood any day.

Contact your insurance company before doing anything. A wood stove can be the cause of ridiculous rates with some companies. I opted not to buy a home with one due to the hoops they wanted me to jump through.
