Odometers off for motorcycle training?

When I taught several years ago, speedos and tachs were removed from all the course bikes. This was done to take away the distraction, so that the newbie riders would focus more on keeping their head and eyes up and scanning the road ahead.
 
A lot of street legal stuff will be taken off to save damage while on course.
Then put back on to sell the bike when it has finished it's duties.
The bike will look cleaner that way and be worth more money after all is said.
 
When I did my course through RTI (King City) they had Marauders, I think, but not rebels. I don't remember about tach and ODO, but all the bikes had the signals and horns removed.

That's kind of weird. Don't you need to demonstrate proper signaling for the M2 test?

nope, the test (m1x to get m2) does not require signalling of any sort.

I know the gearing up course (i think durham, belleville, kingston and a few other colleges) take off the instruments, others may take them off when damaged enough.
 
Yup, like other folks said. When they set up a course with "stop signs" and "intersections", we were all waving our left hands everywhere to signal our intentions.

Now that I'm thinking about it, I'm pretty sure we had speedometers, though.
 
They had the speedos and odometers on the cbr 125 I learned on at RTI. Last I saw it was at 2800 lol. Lots of circles around the parking lot for that one.

as far as i know rti doesn't take them off unless the bike has been modified in a tip over that requires them to be removed for safety. gearing up (as mentioned by gummiente) does take them off, so it varies from school to school
 
Ok, cool. So I guess that's legit. But what does that do in terms of making it street legal? I know with cars it's illegal to tamper with the odometer so I would imagine it's the same for motorcycles, isn't it?
 
there is nothing illegal here. it is illegal to tamper and then try to hide it. but speedometers are removed from accident vehicles and replaced all the time. as long as the information is made known, there is nothing illegal. and they seem to be disclosing everything.

also, if its a school bike you can bet mileage is pretty low. they run circles in a parking lot at relatively low rpm. although the clutch/transmission probably take a beating.
 
This is from a store, right? Not a private seller. I wonder if these guys regularly sell bikes for the motorcycle schools, and if so - they've sold more than one. See if you can find someone who's bought one as well, and I would suspect that a store would provide some sort of warranty?
 
a motorcycle safety course is the last place i'd ever want to buy a bike from...

schools regularly sell their bikes off. a few years back i remember stumbling across a pile of dirt bikes when shopping around, one of the schools was getting a new fleet. they were pretty cheap. no idea about warranty.
