how does the red light cam take a pic of the vehicle before the white line?

hi so my mom got a red light cam tix for turning right. what i dont get is (is this normal?), the letter shows two pics, first pic is the car before the white line, second pic is the car turning. can't see the whole car in the 2nd pic, but the rear of car is visible. on the pictures there's this clock thing. it showed between 1st and 2nd pic, two seconds have passed.

just wondering, how does the red light cam take a pic before a car actually "runs a red"? it's like the red light cam can predict the future.

meanwhile there's actually another car going straight running red in the pictures.

It's a video. Some of these will actually let you check the web and see the video of you doing the pass thru the red.

Is that even valid to give a red light ticket when the person turns right? It will probably get thrown out.

I think they show you didn't come to a complete stop before making the right hand turn. I got one at Don Mills and Finch while driving to peanut plaza to get me some yummy yummy jerk pork. If you didn't come to a complete stop behind the white line and then slower move forward before proceeded you'll get a ticket.

I had the understanding turns are recorded however not a penalty. Also there are two seperate equipment mounted on posts a few feet apart, the first is the sensor the second , the actual camera. they know your going before you hit the white line.

Why on earth not? People still should stop before making a turn, although there appear to be more and more people who don't believe they need to.

do u do full stops at every stop sign 100% of time?

It does not matter if he does or doesn't. It's the rule. You break it - you pay. Simple is that.

This city is trying to squeeze every cent out of us nowadays, including these money-grab red-light cameras bullsh*t.

Dont get me wrong, I'm all for following the rules and do so, however I was sliding through an amber braking one night in December and started to go sideways, I accellerated to straighten out , went through and got nailed at a red light cam , tried explaining that to the God's trying to fight it, looked up info on fighting it and came up with that. Ended up having to pay the ticket just in case you guys were curious ! =)

While I do not work for the police, or City of Toronto, the operation of red light cameras was explained to me some years ago.

These cameras are triggered by a series of sensors in the road. One sensor is located just before the stop bar and one is after the stop bar. They are connected with the traffic controller at the intersection and allow the computer to determine the speed of the vehicle as well as the length of time before the vehicle crossed the stop bar, after the signal turned red. From this information the traffic controller determines the vehicle is not going to stop and it then triggers the cameras to fire a series of photos.

The first photo shows the vehicle before it crosses the stop bar; the second shows it within the intersection. Since the red signal is also shown in the second photo it is quite difficult to agrue that you stopped, since you are shown to be well beyond the point where you are supposed to stop. There is a third photo that shows a close-up of the plate.

Even though the OP's mom made a right turn at this intersection, she is still required to come to a full stop before proceeding. The only good thing about these tickets is they do not go on your driving record and there are no points involved. Best to chaulk it up to a lesson learned and remember to come to a full stop whenever you see those signs that say there is a red light camera at the intersection.

To you have a link or other source of information verifying this?

Thanks.

Yes I need to see a link as well. My dad is going to fight one.

BTW the pics are hilarious. I burst out laughing when he showed me. lol

Think he meant 'no demerit points'
OMFG if I hear someone talk about demerit points one more time... (not directed at you nfq) jeeeebus!

Sitting in court the other day, this lady goes up and takes the "plea deal" and pleads guilty to three of her five offenses on the ticket, reduced fine to $50 all in, and no demerit points. She sits down beside me after her plea to get her paperwork together. She says:
"Wow, so glad they got rid of the points. Insurance company said if I got even one more they would cancel me!"
"Ummm, your insurance company was talking about convictions, not points, and you just got three of them!"
She FREAKS out and runs up to the judge saying she wants to take back her plea, she didn't know what she was agreeing to, etc. Security escorted her out of the courtroom.

Man it irks me how people think demerit points have anything to do with anything :(

If you ever need to worry about demerit points, you'll already know really well what they are!

The ticket goes to the registered owner of the vehicle, not the actual driver at the time. It is more or less like a parking ticket. One of my staff picked up one last year in one of our fleet vehicles and he was required to pay because we could figure out who was driving. When he paid he did not need to identify his DL number, all they wanted was the cash.

Think about this for a minute.

How the hell will it go on your driving record? How can they PROVE that YOU were driving?

There is no way it will be on your personal driving record.

ANYBODY could have been driving your car that day.

To me, the obvious question (which I don't believe anyone's asked) regarding the intersection where the OP's Mom turned: Is it a corner that's signed 'No turn on red'? If it is, it no longer matters whether she stopped or not, only that she proceeded through on a red.
