Close call ... glad to be here and typing

Geez Brian, I'm glad you are OK. There shouldn't be ANY 4 way stop signs IMO... they should roundabouts or stopping in only 1 direction.

Probably your fault. You forgot to remove your invisibility cloak before riding.

Seriously, good planning, good riding, good instructional opportunity. Maybe he'll won't kill the next rider.

Brian,

Thanks for sharing. We can never take for granted the actions (or inactions) of other drivers. This is a great reminder.

Glad things turned out for the best.

Cheers.

Good call...good to see you made it out alright.

TBH, I'm not sure if drivers really take it to heart when you tell them nicely. I sort of feel like they have to be scared by the experience. I've come close to doing ****, but I always manage to calm myself down just before I do anything dumb. But I think it really works when they think you're actually gonna knock them out. For the closest call that I've ever had, the guy looked like he was gonna cry when I parked in front of his car and walked over to confront him.

But that's 'cause I do things based on reinforcement. A negative experience is easier to remember than a positive one, and it seems unlikely that this guy's now gonna be less cautious around bikes 'cause one biker was crazy/a dick/handled it horribly.

Glad your ok. Depending on wether or not I have a vehicle behind me or not I come to a stop in those kind of situations to absolutely make sure I don't have a close call. I've had close calls in my cage with these type of intersections.

Great save, great learning point, will definitely keep this in mind...including how you handled the aftermath!

But this approach would require coming to a stop at EVERY intersection where you don't have a stop sign and there is either visible cross traffic, or a blind approach from one of the other directions so that you don't know if there's cross traffic. That isn't very practical and I would say it's more likely to get you in trouble. Slowing down - discreetly - and planning for the errors of the other drivers as much as you reasonably can is a more practical approach. Keep in mind that slowing down obviously or by too much could cause the other driver to think that you are going to make a turn at the intersection and CAUSE the driver to pull out in front of you.

Yes, in the ideal world, all such intersections would be roundabouts rather than stop signs, but it isn't the world that we live in.

Spider senses come with years of exp of riding on the roads, no school can teach you everything you need to know about traffic. Good post BP.

I do what you do(slowing down and looking for an out just in case) for most intersections but if I see a car peeking out that might have not seen me I come to an almost stop(this is only if there is no cars behind me) until I know I know they have seen me and are going to stop.

Most important thing is to be aware of your surroundings and to always envision an out if stuff goes wrong just like you did. What you did was perfect, I was just saying what I do some times cause of my experience with retarded drivers. I would rather come to a stop(as long as its safe like I stated before with having no one coming up behind) and have the person turn then be through the intersection and hoping I don't get taken out.

Glad this turned out ok. The fact that the guy pulled over and rolled his window down, showed respect of his screw up.

With caboose's example though, the close call didn't seem to deter the guy's intention of gettin' in line at the drive through. Guy should have at least pulled in and parked and thought about how close he came to creaming someone. Same with Honda van guy for that matter. Should have been on the side of the road already with a little time-out.

The ones that really piss me off are the ones who go into deny and argue mode. Then you KNOW it is only a matter of time until they try to kill someone else. Must - - resist - - the - - rage.

Yeah spidey sense and judgement....had a potential today with a u-turner on Mississauga Road.
Knew he missed his turn as his convoy made the turn and he didn't.....
Just did not trust him and actually accelerated this time to pass him as another vehicle was in the opposite lane - figured his attention was on the oncoming he had to turn into rather than me behind him.

I really doubt he ever saw me as he immediately yanked a hard u-turn and sped back to the corner to catch buddy ( could see this in the rear view mirror ).

With no oncoming traffic I would have been down to a crawl with horn and light going - I HATE u-turn risks....and vans with tinted windows make it worse. ...grrrrr.

I have been riding that road for many years. I have seen more than a few cagers run that stop sign. Scary indeed.

Going east west during rush hour in that area is dodgem cars all the time. I sit it out at the Shed then come counter traffic home when the rush is over.
Not worth the angst.

James Bay Highway was soooooo nice....no cross roads for 100s of km....just moose and caribou :confused1:....sigh ;)

The van was going east-west? You were going North-South?

he other way around, but it doesn't matter much ...

He had a stop sign, you were approaching the intersection. He decided to go through but he didn't clear the intersection before you got there? You had to dodge his car by going in the other lane and IN FRONT of him? So then he did see you?

Correct. Looks like Brian was lucky that the cager took off really slowly. If he was in a hurry and floored the throttle it might have been a very sad day.

Great save Brian!

Isn't just weird how sometimes you can just feel that a cater is going to do something stupid? Its happened to me more then once. Your riding and just get a feelers mg about that car beside you, or the car approaching an intersection and something goes off in your head telling you to be ready for this car/van/truck. Like I said I've been able to avoid problems because of this. Of course you can't foresee everything . Any one else ever get that feeling before and watch it come true? Weird huh?

two way stops on 4 way cross roads are just retarded...sooooo many times i have had vehicles pull out in front of me whether i'm on a bike or in the car and not realize i still have the right of way...the worst for me is at sherway gardens when you turn onto sherway gate from evans avenue, from sherway gate you have the right of way at the T junction into the mall...soooo many people roll through that stop sign and cut you off, then they yell at you because they think they have the right of way...good to hear you keep your spidey sense tuned, and ride another day...
