Are you a considerate cager?

We all see lots of cars doing dumb things, I had a pick-up cut me off yesterday in a parking lot then chose to straddle 2 lanes on the road to keep me from passing him when we got out of the lot. When I got around I see the young lady in the car in front of him on the bb doing some texting or answering an email... while crwaling down the road at less then 20km/h (I see the current distracted driver enforcement program is sinking in )

We all (well most) see a lot and ride with a differnent awareness on bikes, but do you think you regress and end up being like many of the cagers when you are in the confned space?

I am sure I drive a little less focused in my car as many probably do, but I know I am not ignorant to others on the road

I make my girlfriend reply to texts and answer my phone. I'm actually more aware of motorcycles now and actively try to make things easier for them unless they're driving like a dick. While driving out to Niagara there was a couple on a Harley 2 cars up and to the left, which I noticed was being tailed really closely by a van. A few times I thought the van was going to hit him because of how last minute all of his stopping was, so I cut my way in and gave the bike space until we got on the Skyway.

I've been driving for a few years before deciding on getting my M1 and joining this community. Whenever I'm driving around motorcyclists, I always leave them plenty of space to change lanes, pass or slow down. I never pick up or answer my phone when driving, ever. I've never ridden before so these things mentioned here kind of worry me as a newbie rider.

I've been driving for 42 years and riding for the last 8 and I believe riding has made me a more aware and considerate driver. I drive the car like I ride the bike and find myself shoulder checking and doing the right, left, right head turns as I go through intersections. I check the mirrors much more frquently and I find I look much further down the road. I also seem to be more aware of potential problems and I don't space out as much anymore.

Being a rider I am always concerned when I come in proximity to bikes and give them lots of room and plenty of warning of my intentions. Like others I will move in to a blocking position if I see other cages acting squirrely.

I think riding is really the best training for driving and I'd like to see rider traing being a mandatory part of the driving licensing experience. That would surely go a long way to making the roads safer if drivers knew the issues we all face.

Ride safely friends,
Spyug.

Since I started smoking the green stuff back in the day.. I went from super aggressive to really relaxed and super considerate.

I watched this bit from the UK where there was a really aggressive driver and an old man that raced from one side of the city to the other. The old man took his time, accelerating slowly and what old men usually do. The aggressive driver gunned it at ever green light and in and out of cars. Even though the aggressive driver got to the destination first.. it was only by about 30 seconds.

Since watching that I've learned that allowing people in front of me, especially trucks, and just taking my sweet time going the speed of traffic that it really makes the commute more enjoyable. I can listen to my tunes, sink into thoughts or text on my phone. :confused1: Psych!

At one point I used to smoke, text, and drive at the same time and steered with my elbow. After the law came into effect, I just gave the phone to my girl lol

It really doesn't matter what the driver is doing: I have a friend who used to cell and drive manual. Him and I used to make weekly trips from Waterloo to Toronto, and London to Toronto. Neither of us have had an accident or ticket in our entire life, nor have we ever been honked at. The worse I've done was drive with my head turned to the back seat to talk to some friends, and I ended up running over a raccoon...I still pray for him today and I named him Mr. Fur Fur. Oh, I also drive with my leg crossed (yay for not driving standard!).

On the other hand, I've noticed a correlation with females + cell phones = **** *** driving. Guess to each their own; some people just can't multitask.

Both sexes drive equally bad, whether it's texting and driving or just obeying the rules of the road in general. I've seen tons of men drivers who couldn't multitask to save their lives.

What are you waiting to kill someone then change your driving habits... Please don't drive distracted and think it's ok cause you haven't cause a collision.

Talk to me after you try driving in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, or any other high density areas. Downtown Toronto is a JOKE. You could drive with two feet in Canada. HELL! Handicaps can drive in Canada.

I don't know what it is about driving in Canada that makes drivers so bad. I noticed that a lot of Asians (including Indians and other brown people) suck at driving here. Yet if you go to their native country it's like "WTF IS GOING ON?!?!?!?!!!?!?!". Yet they don't have ANY of the laws we have here. I'm tempted to look up accident rates in Canada and the US vs. foreign countries with high density pop areas but too lazy.

If you can drive in any of the areas I listed, and others, while talking to people in the car, you can drive with two feet here while on the phone, somking, and maybe even blind.
