407 Transponder Questions

Would the transponder be picked up if I just shove it in my backpack?

Also, how exactly does the transponder work? Can I just take one that is registered to another car and vroom with it? Or do I have to register my bike?

It used to be that you could contact 407ETR to register your bike plate against your car's transponder. That way you don't need to carry the transponder, and you still avoid the video non-transponder charge. Contact 407ETR and ask if that is still in effect.

Alternately, just carry your car's transponder in a pocket or a backpack. As long as the transponder isn't buried in a metal case, the signal should be picked up.

My transponder is registered to my truck plates, but I move it to my cars when needed. I've also used it while on my bike. Regardless of vehicle, the bill shows my entry and exit as if I had been in the truck.

You don't a transponder for a bike, as the above post mentioned 407 won't bill you the video charge.

If you take a a transponder registered to another car you might be ok, as long as they pick up the signal. The problem I've faced is that the transponder is sometimes not detected, especially when not mounted on the windshield so I can't comment on a backpack.

My suggestion is register your bike, It doesn't cost you anything extra to register your bike and it's less hassle. You don't have to pay video toll charges unlike cars. Plus every now and then, I get a free ride (or I should say cheaper) as they sometimes fail to pick up my plates on exit.

Motorcycles are now registered to a vehicle plate. However when I linked the bike to the car account I kept getting video tolls anyway. It took a few calls for them to finally get it correct.

My friends have a theory that I haven't tested yet. If you hit the arch fast and on an angle the system won't register you. Any thoughts?

I just called them; they told me you won't get video toll charges even if you don't have a transponder and to call them back if I get billed video toll charges.

He's saying if you register your bike to your car's transponder then you won't get charged the fee. You still get charged the video processing fee if you don't have a transponder or your bike registered to one.

I assumed that the process is not fully automated which is why they charge that much for it
This is the case. They actually have staff who review the video of plates, which is what you're paying for. When you use a transponder they can skip this process and so they don't charge you for it.

Just stick your foot out the back of the bike to cover the licence plate. All the cool kids are doing it

...

Wouldn't it be smarter just to pull over, tape something on the plate, ride over the thing, and done? lol

I mean there's a bunch of GS500Fs, they'd never find me...I think.

They say you need one transponder per vehicle, or risk getting additonal charges. In the case of a bike, you register to your plate and put the transponder away. alternativley you could carry the car one as I did and it should pick up in most cases. In the summer, I carried it in my chest pocket of my mesh jacket with no issues.

Years My plate is bent slightly upwards and I had an OPP pull me over saying I was blocking my plate:rolleyes: I showed her the transponder and it along with another bogus charge were tossed and she was reprimanded. I had 407 bills noting my plate numbers on file, etc...

All in, it still cost me a few hundred dollars out of my pocket for the inconvenience, but I would have been screwed as she included another completely bogus charge as well

It's on their website.
you just need to call them and register your licence plate to waive off the video toll charge.

Q. Do I need a transponder for my motorcycle?
A. You are not required to lease a transponder for motorcycles. Simply contact 1-888-407-0407 and give us your motorcycle licence plate number(s). We will flag your account so you are not billed the Video Toll Charges.

Oops, I should go and call them again. Ty.

People on bikes actually pay for the 407!!? I have been taking it almost daily, they must be sending it to the wrong address as I have not yet received anything ;)

There are quite a few who've tried it and said it doesn't work; I can't speak from personal experience.
Additionally, I witnessed a guy nearly wipe out on the on ramp trying it. Correction : He didn't try taking the ramp at full lean. He tried to pretty much go on the shoulder, which had a bit of gravel I must add, at breakneck speed and barely missed the right tower pole when his rear fish tailed a bit as he lost traction.

Looking back, it was quite amusing to watch for me ( although, funnily, I don't recall feeling quite that amused at the time), but that's only because it turned out well for him in the end with just a minor scare I'm sure.

Some people with fender eliminators don't get charged because their plate is so high or angled in such a way that the cameras won't be able to pick it up. How long have you been using it? Initial billing takes about a month and a half to two months to come through because of the setup involved. Otherwise, be careful. They do keep track of repeat offenders when it comes to hidden plates, which eventually leads to an OPP officer waiting for you at the on-ramp. I believe they have, or used to have, a list of people who were nailed for this and they really don't do much in terms of ticketing you. They just hand you a bill for all of your unpaid usage.

Hahaha well i dont think i will get a bill, anf my plate is mounted almost at the rear most part of my tail, but it seems I always accidently do a leg stretch and it gets in the way of the plate. So weird how I only feel like strecthing when i hit the 407 on ramp.
I dont think they track repeat offenders. Everything is electronic, and the only way people get billes is the system grabs the plate and records and send the billing right away to whoever is in charge of that. There isnt some person watching every veicle coming on and off of the 407.
If there was OPP on the on ramp, then maybe I would not feel like streching my leg :happy3:

As i noted they can charge you with obstuction of the plate like the OPP tried to give me. I had records of bills that went to court. My charge was dropped, if you are not getting and have no bills to back up with a modified plate, you may not have this out

I'm being as direct as I can. They do track these people, there is a list and there are people looking at the videos. If the system can't see the plate and generate a bill, you can bet there are a set of eyes on that image. When you see it for yourself it's actually quite impressive.
