Stupid me...

So I take my GSX-R out of the garage for a ride today. I put the kickstand down and get off, but just as I get off, the bike starts to fall. Stupid me didn't have the stand firmly down.

Luckily I catch the bike before it hits the concrete with my leg and foot. Put it back up and notice that the shift knob has broken clean off. Seems like cheap cast aluminum.

Bike is still under warranty. Would Suzuki Canada cover that? If not, should I just weld it back on or go back to a dealership and have them put a new part on?

hey it happens...but better to take it to the dealer and see it is under warranty and have them do it properly...better to be safe.

Doubt they would cover it as it was your own mistake and not a malfunction or something. I'd just weld it back if possible (assuming i think its what i think it is, an dnot something vital.) or if you have the extra moola, get a new one.

No warranty. You can't weld it.Buy a new shifter and bolt it on yourself.

#1 don't tell them you dropped it!!

#2 not everyone can JUST weld aluminum.

I can't see a shift let being more than 20-30$..

they may cover it if he lies...;)

I'll just say the shift knob broke off and ask if it's covered under warranty. They'll probably say no, it's my own fault. I'm willing to pay for the new part (labour and all). It probably won't cost that much. Still kicking myself for causing this in the first place.

Any places that you guys recommend? I bought the bike at Suzuki of Brampton but I think they've now are Brampton Powersports. Should I take it there or some other Suzuki dealership?

No scruples?

Not really. I'm sure the dealer/Suzuki Makes more than enough for a little shifter.

I don't have much faith in dealers or any place mechanics.

Luckily for me, it started to fall just as I got off the bike. I was able to catch it in time, bracing the bike against my body - mainly my leg and torso. I stuck out my foot as well, just to make sure it hit every part of my body instead of the ground. Don't know what part of me the shift knob hit to break off, but after surveying the bike, that's the only thing that was damaged.

I started the bike after all of that, and it was in 2nd gear. Rode it around the block in 2nd to see if everything was ok, and everything was fine. Had to ask my friend to manually shift the bike into neutral for me as I parked it in the garage.

Too much for a tow and the bike is still rideable, so will probably just ride it in 1st or 2nd gear to the shop.

just buy a new shifter for 50 bones and put it on yourself. may even be cheaper than 50

once aluminum has been bent you should never weld it. The structural integrity has been compromised

Shifters are meant to either break off or bend so internal damage won't happen to the tranny/gears. I lowsided a few years back and my shifter bent completely backwards. I would just pay the money and have it done.
