Do you tip if they charge for delivery?

Lately i've noticed places are getting ridiculous in their charges for delivery. Pizza Pizza is 3.50, which is fine, but a lot of smaller places are charging like 5-7 bucks, some places charge 12 dollars for delivery now!! And this is on top of having a minimum order of like 20-30 dollars for delivery.

When you have to pay delivery fees like this, do you still tip? I try to but now its getting harder, where i end up paying 10-15 dollars more for delivery food than if i went into a restaurant and bought it, including the tip in the restaurant (cus most food is more expensive anyway from the delivery menu). I know delivery guys make their money on tips, but when im already paying the restaurant 5-7 bucks to deliver the food, another 5 to the delivery guy seems extreme.

Personally, i still tip, but i find i tip less as the delivery fee goes up. Pizza Pizza, I'll give the dude 5 bucks cus their delivery fee is 3.50. Anything over 4 bucks for delivery starts coming off the tip. If delivery is free, I'll do like 5 bucks base tip and then any change up to the next nearest 5 (So like 32 dollars, +5 = 37, +3 to make 40 = 8 dollar tip).

And before anyone says it, yes, I am cheap.

I wouldnt call you cheap. There are people who only ever pay what is legally required....so no tip.

Not much experience in this area. No one delivers to my area. The odd time they do the charge would easily be over $5.

Interesting question. I'm notorious for being too generous when it comes to tipping. If the driver gets 100% of the delivery fee then I guess you are tipping them but being forced to do it. I would like to know if the store gets a piece of that though.

They only pay the drivers min wage. If they do 10 deliveries an hr and the store charges $3.50 for the deliveries then the driver only gets min wage of that is expected to make most of that up in tips. I don't believe in tipping but I still do... usually I'll round up to the nearest $5 but if it's under $2 then I add $2-$3. I am cheap with my tips. You're delivering pizza after 35 min just 5 min short of then free delivery point then don't expect much a tip. If they delivered within 10 min of ordering then yes they get a generous tip.

Yum...raw pizza. I tip anyway.

Well that sucks donkey balls. The delivery guy supplies his own vehicle and all the costs that are associated and the company profits from this.

Sometimes. At some of the smaller places its pretty obvious the delivery guy is part owner of the store (probably a son or cousin or something). Those are generally the places charging a lot of money for delivery too. At chains though yeah, the delivery guy would be driving his own car and seeing none of that fee which is pretty ******.

Back in HS, I did delivery for a chain.. They'd give me like $2 per delivery, which would cover the car-related expenses, but anything extra would come out of the tips. Once it all got factored in, I was making less than minimum wage (that was $7ish per hour at the time), so I skipped out on that one and got a warehouse job in a chemical plant. The smell wasn't as good, but at least I made a lot more.

By the way, for bartenders.. I'm not sure how it is now, but I waiters and bartenders also used to be paid less than minimum wage and expected to make it up through tipping. If you were a hot chick working a ritzy club, you could make a mint, but if you worked a dive, you'd be lucky to get up to minimum wage or a couple of bucks more.

Call and ask how much of the delivery fee goes to the driver.
Every place will be different, but i'd be ordering from the one that gives the whole delivery fee to the driver.
As long as the owner isn't taking advantage of recent gas prices etc... and pocketing it for himself.

I'm a firm believer in tipping, but if i know the driver allready made 3.50, he might get a loonie from me.

There are two tiers of minimum wage, if you serve liquor then you get the lower tier.

I don't tip for delivery if they charge a fee. Sorry, but it's not my fault that you as a delivery driver accept that the company you work for hates you. I do tip a lot to servers at restaurants that are very good, but if they're bad, then I don't tip much, if at all.

I delieverd for Pizza Hut back in '98 and I would get 1.50$ for every delivery plus tips, if it was out of the "zone" I would get an extra 2$.

Still the same. Minumum wage is $10.25 and for servers it's $8.90.

I tip. These folks depend on their tips and also need them for gas and maintenance money on their vehicles. Besides, I don't want my next delivery to include spit.

I used to deliver pizza for a small independent family owned pizzeria. Delivery fee was $1.50 and I'd get to keep that plus tip and the $30 float ( money to make change with). However it was my car, my gas, and of course insurance out of my pocket. I found that tips were always between $2 -$5 no matter what size the order. I would personally think that the size of the tip is relevant to distance traveled from the pizza shop to your house. That being said its a tip and not a requirement so anything I got was always generous seeing how you really don't have to tip at all.

These days, i honestly have no idea how far a delivery place is from my house. I press buttons online and food comes to me. I dont take distance into consideration any more when deciding how much to tip. Plus I find that if somewhere delivers to your house downtown, theyre generally within 6 blocks.

I always tip well at bars though cus i realise those people make less than minimum wage. Plus if you tip well at the bar, you get better service and better drinks.

Im glad to hear from a couple actual delivery guys though on tipping, makes me feel better. I've been yelled at by delivery guys and cap drivers for not tipping enough. In every case, the service was absolute ****, like the delivery guy showing up over an hour late after I already called the restaurant and was told they were on their way, or cab drivers who drive me in a giant circle to run up the meter, thinking I wont notice. Knowing that any tip is seen as generous by reasonable people makes me feel better about my tipping.

my buddy gets furious if he doesnt get tipped (works at a pizza nova), he does drive a v8 to do deliveries though. kind of stupid if you ask me...

Back when I was 17 or 18 I delivered for pizza pizza for a few weekends to help up a buddy of mine who was a driver for them when one of the other drivers quit or got sick or something, can't remember.

We got paid minimum wage and that's it. You lived on the tips. Most time it was only 1 or 2 bucks too. It was super rare to get 5, and that was usually only when you delivered to a party or something where everyone was drunk.

I drove a mazda 323 at the time, and still after everything I think I was only making around 10 or 12 bucks an hour. That was over 10 years ago though

i spent one night delivering hot food in niagara. i got paid $3/delivery (some schmuck got the other $2). i got maybe $1 tip per delivery. i got maybe 4 deliveries per hour. this minus car costs etc. i figured i made about $7-8/hr each night.

its pretty obvious why i only worked there one night.

i never order delivery, but i would tip if i did.

many places are now hiring 3rd parties to manage deliveries. which means drivers must front the cash for the food, then hope to be properly reimbursed by the customer + tip. one lady tried to stiff me saying i had the wrong bill. she told me to go back to the restaurant, she was then confused as to why i wasnt going to leave the food with her while i "cleared up" the bill.

food delivery sucks.

beware of adds like this. they have a good racket going, but dont be the bottom rung on that ladder.

all in all, it was a good night. i had fun. met some people. went to a party at a house i delivered to after the shift as well. plus i got to listen to a leafs game without much interrption.

Somewhat related.
If I go to a restaurant that charges "gratuities" on the bill and expects it, I will NOT give a tip even if they deserve it as that's a pretty cocky move. A tip is something that is earned, not something that should just be assumed you will get.
I'll just pay up what the cost of the bill minus their little scam and walk out.
