There is no fair competition between union and non union, especially in construction. Unions are deep in the pockets of politicians and councillors, they have the law and policy on their side. Try finding a construction project in Toronto that isn't a union gig and let me know how much business you can do without joining.

Unions are losing more and more projects to non union.
The IBEW has at least 200 licenced guys waiting for work at any given time.

not to worry.........soon enough the conservative government will drive unions to ever smaller memberships and influence. And then we all (organized and non union workers) get to watch our salaries, pensions, benefits and workplace safety swirl down the toilet bowl.
big business and the politicians they own have done a marvelous job of pitting non unionized workers against unionized workers in a classic devide and conquer strategy.

we only have to look across the border to know how this will end. who needs a decent paying union job when you can work two non-unionized minimum wage ones with no benefits or job security? win!!!

big business and their political cronies want it both ways. They want to pay skilled workers three fourths of **** all with little benefits but expect them to buy all the garbage they produce.
Big couriers are able to afford that by not being obligated to deliver into any region of the sticks at a reasonable rate. There were cases where shipping via CP was $20 and shipping via a big courier was $500.

This means that the majority of CP's customers are subsidizing the costs of deliver to the minority that choose to live in the sticks. Is that fair?
(Aside: somewhere in a CP warehouse are a brembo brake lever and a set of iridium sparkplugs waiting to come home).

The way I see it, is that unions are as crooked as the corps they oppose, but at least they are crooked for the little guy. I liked FireStart's point about collective bargaining causing a symetrical situation. Same number of buttholes on either side.
Anyways, my paypal payment for my tach just got refunded, because the seller won't ship to Canada because of the strike. Maybe they'll send it to me now... hope I don't have to bid all over again.
