Tank Bags

I have this one. Part of my tank is plastic so all the magnets aren't on metal and it still holds at speed. Not huge and fits what I need.

I've been using a RoadPak bag for the last year, and its magnets are *very* strong, no chance of it slipping around at all on the tank. They do include a safety strap you can wrap around your bars to be safe, and some models also give you the option of straps to go around the tank itself.

That said, I picked up a Cortech Super 18L bag last week and immediately had to return it -- its magnets are significantly smaller and wouldn't grip properly on one side of my tank. We were leaving their parking lot and the right side completely lifted off the tank! I believe this partially to be due to the shape of the Ninja 650's tank but also to either weak and/or faulty magnets in the particular bag I picked up, as Cortech's products are usually very good, but I checked a 2nd one and had the same issue. So, if you have the opportunity -- and at GP Bikes you will -- ask if someone will allow you to try the bag on the bike. That's your best bet, and you can ensure that the bag both fits nicely, and grips properly.

Roadpak here as well. I used to use the steering head strap but found out no need to. Very strong magnets, also much easier to put on and off without the strap.

Just a thought... The magnets on these tank bags seem to be pretty heavy-duty strength. Would it be safe to carry something like a laptop in "backpack mode"? I'd be scared of the magnets messing up the hard drive. Or do they have some sort of shielding between the magnets and the inside of the bag...?

Hey Everyone. Just a quick question. I want to get a tank bag, because I find backpacks uncomfortable, and being a chick I have a hard time travelling light (aka with only what can fit in my pocket) LOL.

How trustworthy are magnetic tank bags? I can't really imagine four magnets keeping a bag secure on the tank.

Thanks for your input.

I have a Joe Rocket sport tank bag with 4 magnets. I have done some fast riding with it, and it never even slipped. holds all my junk... i love it.

Is water leakage a problem with tank bags generally?

I'm planning on picking up something at GP Bikes or Royal tonight since I will be passing through.

Yes, I would highly recommend AGAINST putting your laptop in it. The magnets are very strong and I wouldn't be surprised if it wiped your hard drive if it got too close. However you're probably talking about a netbook right? if it has a SSD then it *might* be ok. Not sure what else the magnets could mess around with.

I use this joe rocket tank bag, and stuff it with a steel water bottle, giant wallet, glasses case, keys and various other things. Never once had it slip off the tank or anything. I love it and would happily buy another one when this ones life ends.View attachment 25083

my bag has 4 magnets + a strap that goes around the steering stem so its held on even if the magnets dont hold

That's called a purse.

Back to the original thread...;) I've had a Manta bag (the pic Amazon attached is a Manta) for two years and haven't had any issues. I just take a moment to wipe down the tank with a micro-fiber cloth before I put it on. Then store the cloth in the Manta (I use it on my visor as well). You'd be surprised what can fit in that little sucker :D

Mine came with a cover that you can throw over and tighten up if its raining. Its thin and doesn't take up much room in the bag at all. If the one your looking at doesn't come with one, silicon camping spray would probably work.

Have the same Joe Rocket one posted a few earlier, pretty solid and would definitely buy it again.

they are not water proof

I was hoping to find something of similar construction to my Arcteryx Blade backpack, which in 8 years of regular use has never leaked. They should make a tank bag.

I ended up picking up an 18L by Cortech. Kind of pricey but looks well constructed and has a lot of features. The built-in rain cover proved itself during the downpour shortly after midnight last night.
