Should i get collision insurance or not?

good post, I got my bike totaled a month ago, I had collision, funny thing is that It wasn't part of my plan to get hit so I am just glad i wasted my money on collision and now I have a new bike

If you got hit, you wouldn't need collision anyway.

IMO there is no point in getting collision, unless you have a VERY expensive bike. If you don't have collision and someone hits you, you are still covered for the repairs to your bike. The only thing collision is good for is if you mess up your own bike. Which means you will be putting through an AT FAULT claim... = really HIGH car insurance payments for 6 years. You will end up paying more in that than you will save on having the insurance company pay for your bike repairs or even the amount it costs for a brand new bike! (again ... considering it is relatively cheap motorcycle ie under 10k).

If i total the bike myself, can i just tell them i sold it and wont be riding anymore? That way i wont get an at fault accident on my record?

The police usually don't report to the insurance company, at least that's what i figured out a while back.

The insurance company will only know that you have gotten into an accident if you contact them.

For the price of 400, I would rather not get the collision coverage. You can very well put that money towards any upgrade you like or pocket it instead.

Thanks Roberto XD.

Did you upgrade your bike yet? i'd like to buy that Yosh off you XD

Lol, shoulda said something earlier when I put my bike on sale. I sold it within the week of putting it up and had more offers than I could entertain.

Surprisingly, no one haggled.

I'm waiting to get an r6; just waiting for people reply and going to pick it up. Looking for an r6 from the US, it is much much cheaper than here in Canada.

How much did you sell it for? I saw the ad, but forgot the price.

Sold the bike for 3900. Not bad considering that I got the bike for a little more than I sold it for.

Even when collision only makes a $10-20/mo difference it isn't worth it to me unless you vehicle is worth like $10k+. I'm surprised it's a $400 difference for you because it never is that much different for me. Collision only helps in an accident that is YOUR fault anyway and if you make a claim that is your fault your rates (on any vehicle) will go way up for a long time. I always just assume the insurance company will get their money back one way or another. I have 3 vehicles (2 cars and 1 bike) so if I had an at-fault claim against me I'd probably have to go down to one car and even then would probably have trouble affording insurance.

I wrecked my 650R the first day I had it and did over $4300 in damage (dealer quote). The bike cost me $8300. I had full coverage. I didn't make a claim.

If it's your only vehicle though and you don't have the cash flow (notice I said flow, not cash on hand) to fix/replace it and you need it to get to work, then it might be worthwhile.

Comprehensive, on the other hand, I do think is worth it, especially since bikes get stolen so often.

Just my opinion.

+1

And I think $400/year for collision on a Ninja 250 is ridiculously high. I only put collision on my CBR because it was dirt cheap ($83/year). Even with it, if I crashed my bike, I still doubt I'd put a claim through when it would mean my rates getting jacked up. Hell, I should have saved myself the $83 and bought myself a beer! ;)

Nope, don't get the collision insurance.... no point of getting it. Just make sure you get someone else to be at fault in case you are involved in an accident. ;)

Thanks everyone. My final verdict: No Collision but will get Fire & Theft as its not that much more.

i recal not to long ago this "I'll be paying around 1800/year with collision or 1400/without" and thats on a 125... cant wait to see what the ducks going to cost you....

Way to bring back an old thread lol. Collision was $300 more and i ended up getting it.

For somebody who crashes all the time, and whose bike spends most of it's time rubber side UP , I would say insurance would be a very wise move. :) :D

Not sure how life insurance makes you safer considering you have to die to collect.
