Tank Bags

Hey Everyone. Just a quick question. I want to get a tank bag, because I find backpacks uncomfortable, and being a chick I have a hard time travelling light (aka with only what can fit in my pocket) LOL.

How trustworthy are magnetic tank bags? I can't really imagine four magnets keeping a bag secure on the tank.

Thanks for your input.

Those 4 little magnets will hold the bag on at 240 kph +

Guess we know who has tried this...

And to the OP, you can also get those net things and hold a bag in place behind you.

I have used my Tank bag for almost 4 years...I've even had a few magnets fall out. Bag still holds well and during long rides I attach it closer to the seat so I can rest my upper body on it.

It aint going anywhere.

my bag has 4 magnets + a strap that goes around the steering stem so its held on even if the magnets dont hold

I've been using a RoadPak bag for the last year, and its magnets are *very* strong, no chance of it slipping around at all on the tank. They do include a safety strap you can wrap around your bars to be safe, and some models also give you the option of straps to go around the tank itself.

That said, I picked up a Cortech Super 18L bag last week and immediately had to return it -- its magnets are significantly smaller and wouldn't grip properly on one side of my tank. We were leaving their parking lot and the right side completely lifted off the tank! I believe this partially to be due to the shape of the Ninja 650's tank but also to either weak and/or faulty magnets in the particular bag I picked up, as Cortech's products are usually very good, but I checked a 2nd one and had the same issue. So, if you have the opportunity -- and at GP Bikes you will -- ask if someone will allow you to try the bag on the bike. That's your best bet, and you can ensure that the bag both fits nicely, and grips properly.

Same here, the Joe rocket sport tank back that has the zip on top half for extra room. Bought it on 03 and it's still going strong. Even with the top half on it stays on the tank with out problems.

If you get one with magnets Just remember never put it on the ground, or put it on the bike before checking the magnets don't have anything stuck to them.

I have the manta tank bag holds great at speed. My only grip is durring Spirited riding it interferes with my riding style ever so slightly.

Very good advice, I wound up scratching the tank fairly badly the other day not noticing that some dust/junk had somehow gotten stuck to one of the magnets... horrible on a new black bike. :( lol.

Checkout the Oxford Lifetime luggage humpback bags for sportbikes. I have two of different sizes and they are great, rugged and come with a lifetime warranty plus once they are on they aren't going anywhere.

Haha +1, I do the exact same thing :)

Thanks everyone! Appreciate it.

I have an icon tank bag, and I have never had it come off. Actually one time I threw it on my tank in a rush, and forgot to make sure all the magnets were on properly. I rode down the highway, and got to where I was going, and noticed the bag had stayed on with only 1 or 2 magnets barely holding it.

I have the Cortech Super 18l and absolutely love it. I don't feel it will ever come loose and it has a strap to attach it to the handlebars like was mentioned. The underside of it is very soft so I don't worry it will scratch the tank.

I have the Icon Urban.

Commute daily Mississauga - Waterloo.
Average speed is not 60km/hr, it's a little bit more :)
4 magnets + secure strap = never had a problem.
Fits a pair of shoes, lunch bag, papers, diary, phone, wallet + some free space

Just watch when your about to put it on. Check quick that the magnets didn't pick up anything magnetic you are unaware of. Was in a hurry and put mine down for a sec and it picked up some tiny piece of magnetic rock. When I took it off it scratched the tank. Nothing bad enough that scratch repair couldn't buff out but just thought I would mention it.

Don't rule out tail bags. I run a couple of different tank bags, but prefer to keep stuff off my tank and behind me. I use my bungee net to hold my backpack on my passenger seat. Mostly I use the tank bag when on trips.
