Upgrading from 250 cc to a 600 or 750...

So, I'm trying to decide what I want to look for in my next bike. I currently ride a Hyosung GT250R and want to upgrade either at the end of this year or the beginning of next. I definitely want an SS.

I was wondering if there is a huge difference between a 600 cc, and a 750 cc (i.e.: GSXR). I'm not in the market for 1000 cc and was thinking 750 would be nice since I'd have that extra bit of power.

This was brought up because I was looking at used rides and noticed that the GSXR 750 is not much more expensive than 600's to buy used and is not that much more for me to insure.

Questions:

What is the difference in power/handling of 750 vs 600?
Is there a reliability difference?
Maintenance costs and repair?

Any general information on differences would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Brandon

There are no differences in reliability or maintenance. There are no differences in handling either. They're almost entirely identical bikes except for the motors.

I had a GSXR750 for a while as my street bike and it was solid. I bought it after having owned a few liter bikes and while the power loss was obvious, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The bike still hauled major *** on the highway and the extra power over a 600 is absolutely worth every penny. Where a 600 feels sluggish and slow to get into the powerband, the 750 fills the void perfectly. You really feel this if you take a 600 for a spin after riding the 750. Night and day.

There's no question, the 750 is a better bike.

I prefer the 600 to the 750. I felt the 750 is anemic until the higher revs just the same as the 600. The 750 gives you a bigger rush of speed at the higher revs and an equally large hit in insurance. But I prefer literbikes because I want my power at all revs and especially in the middle.

The 750 has 10-15lbs more torque all across the RPM range.. you must be remembering wrong. It's considerably faster all across the revs.

Possibly, but I just got off a dramatically gear lowered and modified TLR. I think it would have taken a lot more torque out of the 750 to impress me so you may be correct.

Oh for sure after riding a big twin even the 4cyl literbikes feel kinda sluggish until you get up in the revs... but riding a 600 and a 750 back to back is the best way to realize just how much 10-15ft.lbs of torque means on a bike.

Yeah too bad that they are not sold in Canada.

You know the saying, think before you act? Well research before you post.

And to the OP, I was talking to a guy a couple days back and he owned a 750. He said there's not much difference but in top end power. Totally identical bikes. He suggested if I were to get a GSXR in the near future, to get the 600.

I was just thinking, with only about 30hp difference between the two, a few aftermarket parts and a power commander might get you into 750 power territory with 600 insurance rates...but with that argument you might be getting into liter bike power with a 750 and some aftermarket goodies...

I'd like to know which mods and how much money it would take to match the actual power of a 750, and by that I mean the low end and midrange as well. Peak horsepower is next to meaningless on a street bike.

At 5000rpm the 750 puts down 45+ ft-lbs of torque. The 600s barely peak that much (10,000rpm). That's a huge difference that bolt-ons simply won't provide.

A few bolt on parts will not get a 600 into 750 hp and a 750 with bolt ons will not get you near 1000cc hp. Even if you where to build a 600 all the power will be top end and would most likely be more useless on the street than it is now. You will never get the torque as the displacement is just not there.

What I'm getting here is I really need to get both of these bikes under me in order to make my decision since people seem to disagree with what the difference really is between the two.

Ya good luck.. you will be throwing some serious money to get a 600 above 115 PEAK hp without a built motor. The only low range you will get is from a gearing change any other hp gains will come at the top end of the rpm range.
