buddy of mine has a 08' R1 for sale and after a couple seasons on a 600rr i'm looking to move up to a 1000cc bike.

any R1 owners want to share their thoughts? i know it's going to be subjective, but it's always good to hear what other riders think :D

i went from a carb 2000 zx6r...to a 2004 fuel injected R1..

big upgrade for me.. i love it.. R1 = sexy

only down side.... insurance jumped up more than i would have liked..

on the plus side the zx6 was a perfect upgrade for my wifes ninja 250 :D

I was riding one once..... stopped at a stop sign and accelerated with some enthusiasm.... but not HARD.... I looked down at the speedo and I was doing 70 something kph...... in first... and there was still tons left in first. The thing is SMOOTH.... but jeez I wouldn't want one in cop happy Ontario.

I've been eyeballin the R1's as well. Yamaha changed the motor in 2009 so IMO get 2009-2011 R1

Wrong. get any FI R1 up to 2008.

Don't go near the 2009+

Read the R1 forum if you have any doubts.....

Research the forums specific to the bike you want instead of asking on a general rider forum like GTAM if you want to make an educated decision.

And, yes, I have owned three of them. the 02 being by far the best one.

I just bought a 04 r1 tonight, so im excited to see how it is. I have owned a 99 and an 02, and never had any issues! yami all the way for me!

How does this compare to the new Ninja zx10r ?

depending on the year but the zx10r's were monsters, especially the 04/05's....def have a lot more balls than the R1 but for me at least, ergonomically, the zx10r's are a torture rack

I have heard a lot of things about the r1s, I had a 2000,2002 and now I just got a 04.
Becareful with the 04 r1's, make sure that the bike your are gettting had the recall done as they had a recall on the TPS (throttle position senors) and if the recall wasn't done, check it for any abnormality on the rpms, bogging or backfiring (backfiring can be exup and or other things).

I guess there are issues with the new motor?

What's wrong with the '09? As far as I know, there was only the camchain tensioner, (which has been updated).

they seem to work pretty well in race configuration.

I'll be testing our 2011 race bike next week, I'll make sure I do lots of complaining about how bad the plateform is.

For the 04's like someone mentioned, if i called any Yamaha dealer, could they just pull my vin and lemme know if the recall was done or not?

well i bit the bullet and i'm the proud new owner of a 08' R1  (crappy phone pics below lol)

i need to get it saftied, are there any mechanics that make house calls on the east end?
