Aprilia Shiver

looking to upgrade to a new bike, and the 3 I was looking at are the Street Triple, Ducati Monster 696, and Aprilia Shiver.
Went and sat on all 3 of them, and I find the Aprilia to fit me the best, now i'm looking to get some opinions from people who own them.
what are the bad experiences you have had with this bike?
what are the good experiences you had?
how hard is it to get parts?
how hard is it to get someone other than the dealer to work on them?

all opinions are appreciated,

Cheers
Max

If the bike fits you, that's all that should matter to you. As long as you maintain it properly, it'll keep running without complaints. Any of your top 3 choices has a relatively high price tag for parts, so that should not be a factor. Any decent mechanic will be able to work on it.

Where the hack do u buy an aprilia now? Can't seem to find any. Wuts up with that? Meanwhile Vespas are everywhere. Really that many ppl buying Vespas?

I have an aprilia shiver. Its a fun bike that will get you lots of attention... I really like it because it has tri-map. You can use Sports which is super twitchy instant throttle response fun, then there is Touring mode which is very smooth and very usable for around town, and finally Rain mode which is completely useless. The bike has a good amount of torque that comes on quite early so its really fun in the city. Some people complain about low speed low rpm fuelling, but its really not a big deal. I suggest you visit, Apriliaforum.com there is a board dedicated to shiver/ dursoduro owners.

Corsa Mechannica in Toronto (new shop) and a place up in Guelph and in Ottawa are the only Ontario dealers. The brand is doing quite well in Quebec.

Have ridden the little monster and it was a really nice bike (holy hell ducati's have strong brakes), but test ride one first because you might find the power lacking somewhat.

Street Triple
Shiver
Monster
^ in order of power/mentalness.

Have you taken a look at the midrange monster or small hypermotard?

Gonna be upgrading soon myself and I road all of these so this is the order I rate them in and why.

1. Street Triple - Smooth, Consistent power band, great suspention package
2. Shiver - Consistent power band, great suspention package
3. Monster - Smooth, very forgiving, suspention is lacking

All three of these bikes are gonna cost you a lot to fix up so be prepared for that.

Good luck on making up your mind and don’t forget to take them all for a spin to see which is right for you.

I would look at the 796, rather than the 696. 796 - Single sided swingarm. Albeit no dry clutch. Monster board - http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org
If I knew what I know now, I'd be on the Triumph. I believe there is a R model with Ohlins shocks, for a $1000 more. You will always be right in the middle of the 2 cylinders good, 4 boring crowd.

The only thing I didn't like about the Shiver was the weight..it's a porky little sunuvagun..

Where's Shaman? He would have good input on this.

I'm around. Parts for Aprilias are not expensive. At least, not any of the parts I've priced or purchased, with the exception of my Akrapovic pipes (Akra and Aprilia are both taking some profit on those...) I have also not had any issue getting parts, Piaggio really stepped up the parts supply to North America after getting slagged for not having availability for years - Aprilia used to be a small independent firm, but Piaggio is huge.

I've heard of no reliability issues with the bike. A quick scan of Aprilia Forums confirms that. It's a twin so you have to take some precautions to make sure bolts are tight and/or thread locked but other than that...

As for upgradability, Micah of Aprilia modification fame has a Shiver top end apart (same motor in the Dorsoduro as well) and is working on a cam & electronics package to uncork the engine to 100hp. That would be a fun, free-revving twin... :)

I wouldn't argue with a Street R either. But it's all in what you want.

I ride a Triumph Speed Triple - and I can tell you that the Triumph Triples are amazing. Parts and maintenance are no problem. Mine has 58k on it, and still kicks *****. Awesome torque / prower, and the sound is really something special. And I'd definately go for the Street R.

wut year speed u got? 58k? wow lol

Inglis Cycle in London is an Aprilia dealer (as well as Triumph, Ducati)

So is BMW Toronto down by the DV.

Not anymore. BMW Toronto no longer is affiliated with Piaggio.

That must have happened just a short time ago... I heard something about this as a rumour. Also heard that they are opening a new shop with Piaggio bikes exclusively.

Thanks for all the replies
I was strongly considering a Street Triple, until I got a chance to sit on the Shiver, and I find it fits me much better, I'm gonna try and take one for a ride this week, and see what its like on the road.
The 696 is nice but it feels a little cramped, and underpowered.

Always wondered about this.

I'm guessing BMW Canada put the kibosh on this one.

All good choices.

As others have said, Id skip the 696 and go the the 7 or 11.

I wouldn't hesitate to jump on the Aprilia either.
