Rattle can paint for race glass?

I have a buddy that regularly adds Mason hardener to Tremclad. The paint cures out completely and ends up hard as hell. You can get the Mason hardener at UAP. Might make a big difference on duability and resistance to gas as well, but have not tried it.

Kudos. If possible, could you ask your friend what proportion he is using? If that works, it'll solve the problem for everyone here. And what would I/we actually look for (retail brand name) at the store. (NAPA)

I think the mixing ratio is right on the can and its just hardener, Mason is the brand name. Its used in the Mason line of urathane automitve finishes. If its not on the can ask the guy at the counter what the ratio is for the paint its made for, don't tell him your putting it in Tremclad cause he'll probably tell you it's not made for that lol.

not sure how dangerous it is but your not spraying it so exposure is minimized. Spayed my own bike with automotve base clear and it made me crazy enough to ride hotshoe in track days at 50 years old. GOOD STUFF
 
That looks really good! Maybe I missed it, but is there a trick to prepping or is it just sandpaper and a lot of time to strip the old paint?

I just stripped all the stickers and sanded down the paint with 120 grit. I didn't necessarily remove all paint though. Then 200 grit to smoothed scratches out. Tremclad filled in minor sanding scratches that normal spraying would not. I also had to do a lot of fiberglass reinforcement where the body was erased or cracked.(second hand bodywork). Close up, some repairs are still visible and my lack of patience produced a few runs but from 5' it isn't seen. If there are no damages to your bodywork, a scuffing with 400 grit would be plenty for the paint to adhere. Oh. I also wiped everything down with mineral spirits and handled the parts with latex gloves. Oil from your fingers will show up when you paint. Like fish eyes.

Awesome. I want to repaint my track fairings. They're second hand and have some damage but they're not too bad. I'm just not looking forward to the long prep time :S.
 
It didn't take very much time because I realized what I had to work with. Took the longest to get the stickers off. They were the full manufacturer body trim stickers like on street plastics. And they were clear coated to boot.:(
Now I have to alter the lowers which I didn't check before. They are designed for aftermarket exhaust headers.I have stock headers and they touch the fiberglass at the bottom in one spot. So I'm gonna cut out where they touch, in a teardrop shape and use fiberglass to form a sort of 'bubble'. Only deep enough to clear the pipes so it doesn't cook.
 
Are you guys having any difficulties with apply decals to the tremclad paint? I recall reading that the GoPro suction cup wont stick too well. I'll be getting some number plates made up and don't want to be S.O.L if they don't sick.

I hope not! But I can't imagine it will be a problem. Looks like R1Guy has a few decals on his tremclad painted bodywork

I haven't had any problems with my numbers or Yamaha stickers... I've got a new 1080 Gopro this year but have not mounted any of the 3m brackets as of yet but I don't see that as being a problem. I won't be using the suction cup cuz it just doesn't seem like the best option.
 
I did some repair to my tail, with paint and clear. Sanded with 1000 grit wet in between paint coats and 1500 before the clear. What should I said the clear with for a decent finish? Use 1500 or go get some 2000?
 
Hey guys, just wanted to update everyone....

I have finished all my panels, I think they're looking good. I used some pin striping tape to separate the colours a little bit... but was having some trouble with the pin striping sticking in a few spots. So I decided to buy the Tremclad Clear top coat to help seal the pin striping in place. It's awesome. I'm not saying it will stand up better or anything like that, but man does it make the panels "pop". Without a doubt it will make the stickers "stick" better too. The finish is great.
 
Will do, just finished up my bike today. Just need to clear the tail (tomorrow) install the dzus fasteners (when the little suckers arrive in the mail) and then I'll snap a few pics.

All and all, this Tremclad paint job impressed me. It kept me busy this winter, and saved me hundreds of dollars.
