Anybody use their smartphone as a bike GPS?

all the 3rd party navigation apps will use maps stored locally on the device. I think TomTom has traffic, that would pull from the internet, but I think you can turn that off. I'm going to the states this weekend to do some shopping and pick up my tires, I plan to use TomTom while I'm there.

Navigon will use NO DATA unless you enable traffic. I use it in the US all the time and my data, data roaming etc. is turned off.

Awesome, thanks guys.

I use TomTom(free, Jailbreak) navigation on my Iphone 4, but I put it in my backpack and have the earphones on. I listen to music and when its time to turn music turns down and TomTom lady tells me where to go... But I might buy that bracket too from the second post...

I have a nexus running android gingerbread. I was thinking I could get a new Bluetooth helmet and use the navigation mode that has point to point voice navigation. You can play music with it. The music fades for the navigation speach and then goes back up. It the battery life that has me scratching my head. Any suggestions for a Bluetooth helmet? I Want it to be stereo.

Based on the feedback from this thread I bought the Navigon software for iPhone. So far so good. It sucks at figuring out the addresses from my contact list for some reason, but that's all I've noticed so far.

Compared to my Zumo I'm losing the weather resistance, vibration resistance, glove-friendlly utility of the thing, but otherwise I'm not losing much. Can still listen to music, talk on the phone, setup bluetooth, look up POIs, create routes, and oh.... it's 15x cheaper!

Look up conductive thread. I bought some and am looking for someone to sew it on my left index finger on the glove, hopefully if it works then you can use capacitive touch screens with your glove on

but didn't you already own the zumo?

I use my IPhone 3G with the Ram mount setup and Navigon! With Navigon all maps are installed so no data is needed!

Also added a 12V assessory plug for it!

Nice setup. I'm wondering since you're running the iphone without a case, how is the vibration on the display? Is it "buzzy" at all?

I'm using iPhone 4, NAVIGON, & Tom Tom (i preffer NAVIGON), both use offline map data, works great. For now i'm using a cheap mount, but looking to buy a solid mount for my sv.

I've got one of these on my bike as well. Perfect for keeping my iPhone charged, especially since the GPS sucks the battery dry in no time. I installed another on a friends bike and she loved it as well.

So you have this hooked up directly to the battery?

And is CT short for Canadian Tire?

I picked this up at CT for $16. It's being sold under the "certified" brand. Looks exactly the same as on the website.

Which Cdn Tire did you guys get this USB connector from? It's not on their website or at my local store.

Bought mine at the one at kipling and rexdale. I think you'll have better luck going to the one with the bigger auto centers.

I have the same setup as Shane'rr, except I'm using a samsung captivate and it's working fantastic!

vibes killed my usb port on the captivate, sent to rogers for repairs. To be fair, it was kinda damaged already from my own abuse. (I yanked it when it was plugged in charging and it flew to the carpet) .
I bought a nuvi 255 for ~$50 (these are on sale at canadian tire right now), but i'm pretty sure i'm going to return it as I just found out nuvi doesn't do tracking. I'm probably going to wire a garmin oregon for future gps.

If you guys are using android, there is a great mapping software called locus where you can import and view all tracks on the screen, with multiple types of maps. Using gtam member Splash's gpx file, it was entertaining to see what good roads there were in the area I was riding.

Ugh people are on their smartphones all the time, now we have them mounted on bikes as well? Next thing you know, people will see their call light up on the phone and find a way to talk while riding. I'm a big fan of leaving the phone in my pocket with no data doing anything. Too many people are married to their phones these days.
