FZR"400" project build

No room between the sub frame and outter edge of the tail section to hide the coolant bottle? I'd go with a smaller bottle and try and hide it out of the way. Those two bottles take ALOT away from the sleek and sexy factory on the tail.... :(

It looks like it has rockets on it or something. Do not like. Then again, this is comming from a guy who used a Saporro beer can to for his coolant overflow on his streetfighter....

I'd mount the FOX resevoir under the battery box or closer if to the rear shock/subframe/frame area if possible
Get a smaller coolant bottle (you really only need like 5 fl OZ for overflow... just have somewhere it can blow off into.... ie. the ground
Ditch the passenger pegs and get a nice solo seat cowl. Helloooo sexy tail!

I would do the stripe on the tank in the Yamaha blue and don't even touch the tail. Have you finished the subframe mounting, the last few pics don't have that peice of wood anymore?

Nah I haven't had that welded in yet. Hopefully this weekend. I want to keep the blue tail plastic as well. I feel like doing the stripe would tie the whole bike together with all of it's colours.

I think you should paint it blue instead of decaling it. I think I have some blue left over from one of my Yamaha Vision projects I did this winter. PM me if you want a quart and I'll give you a fair price.

I'll second the motion for making the tank (and the rest of the bodywork) all blue to match the tail.

+1 on this paint style.

ANd I'm with Scotty about mounting the bottles in hidden spots. Takes away from the sleek and sexy tail. Otherwise you should've just went for my R1 tail, and hid the bottles under that.

Just found your forum. Excellent stuff. I have an 89 FZR400 that I barely ride (second FZR400 - sold my first one 10 yrs ago and picked this up 2 years ago). Bike looks decent but was thinking of moving up in cc's. Last night, I bought a 99 YZF 600R (with a bad second gear). Rather than selling the FZR, was thinking of merging the best of both worlds... and this thread has inspired me. Let me check the bank account and how much patience my wife has.

Great work on your project. I can only hope mine will be half as good.

I am using the stock R6 coolant bottle and mounting it at the right engine case inside the fairings, works well so far. i have tried using a cylinder type bottle in the tail section route but because of the angle, it is not working as well as I first thought.

I am just not a fan of the R1 tail. It's too curvey for me. I like angular

Really appreciate the kind words. Would love to see pics of your build. If you are in toronto I'd love to even check your build ou tin person.

I like the blue strip look as well.
Agreed!

Hmmm I'll have to see how mine works. I think I might have to put some coolant in there to start so when it overflows it will have some fluid to make sure it's at the right level for it to suck some back in.

Got subframe rear mounts done. Just need to cut them down to size and weld them on now. 1X1" square tubing schedule 100 went way over kill on the sizing but I get the pieces free and it will be WAY stronger than needed so that's fine.

Note I spent like 2 hours dremeling those curves just right so they would hug the surface of the shock mount.

Just got back from vacation and started a new job. So I am in Milton and the bike is in London. Anyone with a 110V welder want to help me out for a few beers?

I just need something tack welded on the bike so I can pull the part off and have my friend weld it up properly at work.

Inreb has done a good job of tacking it up for me, so now I just gotta pull it off and get it welded real good. I'll get pics up a bit later.

Got it tig'd at a shop in Oakville that Inreb directed me too. AWESOME job. The guy is aerospace certified and all that nice stuff.

Nice welds yo!

Integrated tail light. Just need to make a plate holder now. I also go those plate light bolts. I have some 1/16th aluminum plate for the license plate holder

Loving this bike and idea more and more everyday.
I may sell off the GSXR and do something similar.
YZF 661.
FZR 400 frame.
YZF 600 tank
USD forks from something or other
GSXR 750 swingarm (thanks for sorting that out for me-I needed a hollow axle solution for my trailer towing)
Fibreglass bodywork emulating the UFO Attack bike.
HID stacked pair of bi-xenons
Adjustable clip ons for comfort or apex-strafing

So I am just working on finishing touches to get it rideable. Then I'll worry about finishing the rest on rainy days.

License plate mount. I imporvised some stuff off the 09 R6 license plate stuff that I got sent erroneaously to me.
The bolts on there are led lights as well.

Finally put some gas in the YZF tank and started the bike with my little 4 cell LiPo battery. The battery must be good because the bike seemed to crank really strong and the headlights seemed brighter than usual.

Some minor things left like tidying the wiring up a little bit more. Also just getting some fasteners for the tail plastic and finally figuring out how to get the GSXR controls to work with the FZR wiring harness which has actually been the trickest task to date. I may end up permanantly modifying the GSXR controls to get them to work.

Ok so she is now rideable. Just got in from her maiden voyage.

finished the exhaust bracket today. still a a handful of things left to do but she is actually rideable right now. I didn't push her much but handling wise she didn't seem too bad at all.
