ZX6R Digital display issue.

A friend's daughter has a 1999 Ninja 6R and lost her key. To get a new one made we had to remove the ignition lock and send it to the local locksmith to have a new one made. Any easy enough fix and the new key works fine and bike starts and runs no problem. The only issue we can see is the digital display portion on the speedo and tach no longer work. We checked fuses and even disconnected the battery for 1/2 hour but no change. There was only one connector and one wire to reconnect and no other connectors were disturbed. The lights on the dials illuminate so it looks like power is getting to the gauges. Anyone experience this and know what the fix may be?

Do you mean the trip / odo and temp don't work?

Yes sir exactly. I have downloaded a manual and there is information on how to test the gauges when disassembled but nothing pointing to a specific cause or any kind of rebooting issue. We did not disconnect the gauge cluster and we were sure to reconnect the ignition properly (and it does function as mentioned) so its a bit baffling.

you'd have to trace it back.

Did you do the work on the ignition cylinder with the battery connected?

it really shouldn't effect the instruements. the main harness would not be getting power that feeds the instruments.

Actually we did but I can't see how that would be an issue with everything other than the ignition still connected. What are your thoughts on this?

My last post got eaten - I was just speculating on maybe the electronics getting cooked through a short somehow with the ignition switch / cylinder being removed with the power connected. I don't know that this happens for a fact, sorry
