Obviously when you meet someone who's posts you've read you want to know his/her online handle. Something like "Hi, my name is <name>. I post on GTAM as <handle>" or even "I am <handle> on GTAM". But after that this person should be referred to by their real, given name ONLY IMHO. When people start using their handle in real life they just look like complete and utter geeks and anyone not in the know how that gets into the conversation is probably thinking "WTF am I listening to?".
Sample conversation:
Guy1: Yo GixxerBooooi87 have you riden the forks today?
Guy2: Sure did R1_Bob_69. Watch out for sand at the hairpin though. Keep the shiny side up. ATGATT 4 lyfe. *high five*
Now let's imagine a female overhears this conversation. This is what she's actually hearing:
Guy1: Yo Night Elf Zoltar the great AKA; mommy's basement dweller. Have you played with D&D: 3rd edition rules yet?
Guy2: Yes, Zoltar the great, son of Thorimon the conqueror, I have. It was great but watch out for the Orc warlords, their strength is great. Keep your sword and shield handy on your travels.
Am I right? Or am I right?
