Yamaha OEM stator or after market?

Hi guys I have a 99 r6 which I believe needs a new stator. Is it worth it to spend an Extra $200 on an OEM yamaha stator? Or is an after market one fine?

Thanks

Matt

I used an aftermarket from Rick's Electric. No problems with it. Id say save your money.

(have fun with pulling the flywheel on your R6 - stupid yamaha design!)

are you sure its your stator issue? and not the rectifier? did you test the voltage across the poles

to test the stator...use a volt meter on ac 200 scale and at idle you should have about 20 volts ac from 2 legs of 3 of the yellow wires or white for yamaha. at 5000 rpms, you should have about 80 volts ac. do this test with the rec/reg disconnected. are you running hid head lights?

55V per pole...up to 60V is acceptable...

Its only the R1 that has it the hard way, R6 is bolted to the cover

dont replace the stator if you are 100% sure by the way of testing it with a multimeter

i had the same common problem with the burnt plug on stator and r/r on my 99 r6. I replaced them both, recharges perfectly. But it died again after a few rides, figured out it was the battery cuz it was a cheap one (Dura Batt). I replaced it with OEM battery bought for $125 tax inclusive, now it starts alot better and runs perfectly.

many people buy a new stator or r/r but never realize it is only the old battery acting up

of course you load test the battery when you test the reg/rec, and the stator (dynamic & static tests)

Damn, didn't realize anyone had replied. Ok so here is the full story...

I bought the bike 2 seasons ago and when I brought it home the first night by the morning the next day the battery had died. So the I went and bought a new battery and the next morning after that the battery was dead again so I brought it to cycle world and mark did a step by step check with. Multimeter on the wiring and said that it was the stator and he ordered a new one for me.

During the days I had to wait for the stator to come in I would switch batteries every morning and put the other one on charge so at least I could still use the bike. By the time the stator came in the problem had gone away so mark said just to leave it then since it wasn't 100% necessary to change it and would save me a few hundred bucks. He said these problems can sometimes work themselves out. I was ok with that so I didn't do anything.

So he's where things got messed up. I got in an accident last year and the bike fell on it's left side and I shattered my wrist. Once I replaced some fairings and little things I started riding it again except something wasn't right about it. The bike didn't have as much power as it did before the accident. So I brought it back to cycle world. They did a carb sync on the bike and it made it better but it didn't fix it... I brought it back for another carb sync and stuff nothing. The bike was misfiring on one of the cylinders, and sometimes when I would twist the throttle it would hesitate before revving. Sometimes the hesitation was bad. Now the spark plugs had been changed just before the accident but I figured there would be no harm in putting new plugs in so I did. Again, it improved but still misfiring, except it wasn't hesitating so much anymore. It wasn't until I unloaded my bike from my truck this past Aug at mosport that it severely hesitated again, but after a run on the track it was fine again.

So I have absolutely no idea what is wrong and why the bike is misfiring. My plan was to just replace the stator if there was a problem at some point and bring it to either riders choice or pro6 to get put on the dyno and see if they can figure out what is wrong with it. I figured I'd do the stator myself to save some money but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Matt
