Wow...

Wow indeed. I too want to know why all these cars are white dammit! Where is Sherlock Holmes when you need him?

I think GTAM is about to be outdone by Jim Kenzie

A parking snob, now I've heard it all.

Gay article. At first I thought, 'what's wrong with how they parked?' Read a bit further... 'nose-in? Seriously??' Someone needs to invent the e-slap pronto.

And what's the deal with all of them using their daddy's money to improperly park cars that are all powered by internal combustion engines?!

I don't know who he's calling a yuppie, but I think he's damn close to one.

I agree with some of his stuff like sticking to the furthest right lane and allowing proper following distance, but his snotty attitude to anyone different makes me not like him. He has a hard on for hating bikes, and anyone that drives a big pick up is apparently a stupid redneck that shouldn't have a license.

'Wow' is right. I think I see something like 5% of cars in parking lots backed in? I can think of plenty of other ways in which to determine whether someone is a good driver (i.e. watch how they drive).

His next article will be ' What's with drivers stealing my parking spot from me when I go to back in?'

I know Jim professionally. He's good people. But he can get crusty. Stretching a bit for content this day obviously. But we all have those "just get by" days.

I actually hate when people stop parking lot traffic so they can take a minute to back in the spot. I don't mind when they do that when nobody is behind or in-front of them.

He might make a point most people cannot do it without the gizmo cameras. I know people I drive with cannot ....

I do it because I'm lazy.. It's easier to back in than to back out, less risky too. With a bit of practice it doesn't take more than 5-10 extra seconds in comparison with just driving in frontally.

But do you mind when people stop traffic so they can back OUT of a spot? I bet if 2 competent drivers raced, one backing in and the other driving in, and then driving out and the other backing out, the driver backing in would win every time.

I was always taught to back in to a spot. It's safer and easier to drive forwards when leaving the parking space.

Tomato, Tomato....And since is VW GTI a "high end car?"

All i saw there were run of the mill newer cars, The only one that tops 50K is the land rover. the rest are all normal cars you will see average people drive.

A Hyundai, a bottom of the list BMW X1, Golf and a Muragon being called "reasonably high end"?

so other than those cars all being white how is that picture different than 99% of parking lots?

I back in... And I don't care who is behind me when I pick the spot. It seriously takes only a couple more seconds to swing the front of the truck away from the spot, put it in reverse and then back up... Funny thing is, when you park that way every time, it no longer becomes a "challenge" it's just simple. The only time it takes me longer is when some impatient idiot gets right up behind me, preventing me from doing the move properly... It's a parking lot, take it easy!

I drive a decently large pick up (ram quad cab short box) and in a lot of the smaller spaced lots, I would have to make a 10 point turn to get out of the thing if I drove it in forwards, plus I can't see people walking or smaller cars in a lot of spaces when I'm trying to back out of a spot.

I went to walmart today and had my trailer still on the back of the truck... Man people are oblivious to the fact that I need extra turning radius and that the trailer will be a few more feet over on the inside of the turn. I park at the back of the lot and put the middle of the truck right down the line bordering 2 spots because I know I'll come out and some idiot will be parked so close to me that I wouldn't be able to turn to get out without taking out their car with my trailer if I didn't give myself that extra 3 1/2" of space... Wonder what Mr. Kenzie would think of that scene?
If I can, I'll back the truck and trailer in to a spot where I can just drive straight out from the space and not need to make a sharp turn, then I'll just take up one spot width.

Actually I think the driver backing out would win every time. Think about it, reversing into a narrow spot between two cars or reversing out into wide open space.

In the real world I prefer backing in as well. There are pedestrians and other vehicles you have to watch for when leaving a parking space so it's definitely the safer way to go. But from a purely mechanical pov, backing in requires more precision driving and, thus, greater effort.

P.S. I didn't know I drive a "high end" car (Murano) ;)

if you're not backing out with care, then perhaps backing out may be faster, but safely there is no way it's faster. Also, once someone is adept at parking properly (azz first), they can do it almost as fast as front first.

Correct. When backing into a spot, you're backing into empty space. When backing out, you're backing into an area where there can be pedestrians and other cars at any time. If you're also driving a truck, it becomes even more of a challenge simply because you have to do it extra-slow and watch out for the hazards.
